Trust In A Gust: The $150,000 VOBIS Gold Sprint is not the richest race on the Caulfield card, but contains the best-performed runner at the meeting thanks to an appearance by Sir Rupert Clarke Charity Cup and Toorak Handicap winner Trust In A Gust.
The Darren Weir-trained millionaire, who cost just $22,000 as a yearling, has been the poster boy for the VOBIS Gold concept so it’s fitting that the stud-bound four-year-old will have his final start in Victoria in a leg of the Premier Race Series.
Fontein Ruby: Only the appearance of Trust In A Gust has denied this filly billing as the headline act on the card. Connections opted to chase the cash instead of tackle Black Type races interstate and it’s a philosophy that’s worked well for them in the past with her having won the $750,000 Caulfield Classic in Spring.
Fontein Ruby goes around in the TBV VOBIS Gold Reef, which is one of two $250,000 races on the card, accompanied by the Gallagher Bassett VOBIS Gold Mile. The $150,000 VOBIS Gold Ingot for two-year-olds is the other VOBIS Gold race on the card.
Bel Esprit Stakes: This $120,000 event carries Listed status, but is full of horses well-performed at a better level than that. It Is Written, Gregers, Unpretentious and Sabatini are all Group 1-placed, while Tried And Tired, General Truce and Pago Rock are regulars at this level with Politeness, Runway Star and Elopingcapable of possibly better. Great race.
Anniversary Vase: The headline act in its own right before the VOBIS Gold races took over the meeting and is again a quality affair. Under The Louvre is certain to again have admirers following a popular last-start win at Mornington, while Marianne, Sistine Demon, Amorino and Mirage are among the others engaged in what is potentially the final start for Group 1 winner Bel Sprinter.
The Championships are done and dusted, but there’s one last dance in Sydney this autumn with the All Aged Stakes and Champagne Stakes – both Group 1 events worth $400,000 – to be run at Randwick.
The All Aged Stakes has turned out one of the races of the carnival, with Chautauqua, Terravista, Dissident,Shooting To Win, Wandjina among nine Group 1 winners engaged, while Pasadena Girl and The Barristergive Victoria a strong hand in the Champagne Stakes for babies.
BETTING PICTURE (TAB prices at 3pm Friday)
Hot Favourite – Trust In A Gust: Now $1.95, after opening at $2.60, he just gets the nod over Fontein Ruby, who has also been well-backed from $2.80 into $2.
Not-so-roughie – Pin Your Hopes: Down the track first-up at Mornington, but a solid showing expected second-up in the last if the move from $41 into $18 has any substance.
Tooleybuc Kid: Been working up to a win and plenty think it will come in race 2, having been $4.60 to $3.
Nautical: Good move for the proven first-up performer in Race 3, into $18 after $35 was initially available.
Jazz Song: No stranger to victory at big odds, having won the Typhoon Tracy Stakes at 50-1, and has been $41 to $21 in race 9.
