The Western Australian Racing Trainers’ Association (WARTA) is seeking consultation with the state government on the proposed sale of the TAB that was announced last week.
The WARTA is concerned that change to the current management of WA racing is being considered without extensive dialogue with key industry representatives.
The WARTA fully supports the present administration under Racing and Wagering Western Australia (RWWA) and is apprehensive of changes to a successful model.
Michael Grant, President of the WARTA, said RWWA had provided stable governance and continued revenue growth in a competitive wagering landscape.
“The WARTA is concerned that the government is prepared to sell off the TAB without speaking to key members of the industry,” said Grant.
“The implications of privatisation are significant and we have concerns the government is not fully aware of the potential risks that are associated with a sell off.
“WA’s racing model is the envy of every other state and privatisation of TAB’s elsewhere in Australia does not instil us with confidence.
“The WARTA seeks assurances and clarification from those conducting the review that future funding currently predicted by RWWA is guaranteed.
“RWWA’s distribution to all three racing codes has doubled since its inception in 2003 and in the past six months there has been revenue growth of 6.6 per cent and a profit boost of 8.8 per cent.
“The WA TAB successfully operates in a competitive wagering environment and there is no groundswell of support within racing to change the existing structure.
“The WARTA is cognizant of the government’s financial motivation but seeks clarity on the future sustainability and prosperity of the WA racing industry.
The WARTA will hold a press conference in the Belmont Park committee room at 11am Wednesday, May 20.
