Vega Magic Closes In On Return To Racing

Star sprinter Vega Magic is closing in on his fairytale comeback to racing for original trainer Sean Casey.

It’s turned full circle for Vega Magic who returns to where he launched his career in 2015.

Vega Magic won nine of 14 races for Casey before linking up with the Hayes-Hayes-Dabernig operation in Melbourne.

His signature Perth wins came in the Group 3 Colonel Reeves Stakes (1100m) and Group 3 Scahill Stakes (1400m) at Ascot.

But it was under the stewardship of Hayes-Hayes-Dabernig that saw Vega Magic elevate his racing to the elite level.

He reached dual Group 1 success across two states, winning the Goodwood (1200m) in Adelaide and The Memsie (1400m) in Melbourne.

He also came close to pinching The Everest (1200m) in Sydney when a close second to Redzel.

But Vega Magic’s future appeared shot and remained on life support after a bad flop at his previous run at Caulfield in August.

He started favourite in the Group 3 Heath Stakes (1100m), but finished 7 ¼ lengths last behind Crystal Dreamer.

It followed similar poor performances when he was well beaten in The Everest and T.J.Smith Trophy (1400m) at Randwick.

But Casey is hoping that a return to a familiar environment can help return Vega Magic to something close to his best.

His confidence was given a big boost after a strong Ascot gallop this morning and a glowing report from jockey Paul Harvey.

“We are really happy with him and pushed his buttons this morning,” Casey told The Races WA.

“We were expecting him to be a bit keen, but he relaxed down the back so Paul (Harvey) gave him a nice solid workout.

“He finished it off really well to the line.

“Paul, who doesn’t know the horse that well, said he wants to be out there and I’m happy with that.

“We did have intentions of getting him ready for the Scahill, but we will let the pieces fall together.

“So we are probably looking at going to the Summer Scorcher (1000m) on Cup day.”
