The Leg Up: Northam Preview – Wednesday 19 October 2021

Race 1 – 12:54PM TABTOUCH – BETTER YOUR BET MAIDEN (1100 METRES)

CISCOJOE was a real eye-catcher on debut and looking to follow him moving forward into this assignment. The half-brother and stablemate of Cup Night comes through a strong form reference at Northam 27/09 and with clear galloping room late, Ciscojoe is the go. ADVANCED went under as a $1.60 fave on debut but the winkers go on and he’ll get some cover from gate one after being exposed to the breeze last start. 1300m back to 1100m has to be a query. First-upper FLOWER IN THE WIND showed plenty last prep and was a strong trialled at Belmont 11/10, while SERVICEMAN and ALMAHER MAN can challenge also.

Tips: 5-4-9-2
Suggested: 5. CISCOJOE win.

5. CISCOJOE
4. ADVANCED
9. FLOWER IN THE WIND
2. SERVICEMAN
1. ALMAHER MAN

Race 2 – 1:34PM AMELIA PARK LODGE MAIDEN (1100 METRES)

MAGNIFICENT ANDY looks the horse to beat on debut. Hasn’t been fully tested in his two lead-up trials, with Brad Parnham appearing to have plenty of horse underneath him, and shaken up on raceday this fellow is expected to let down too strongly. Possible leader DEMERITS PRIDE showed gate speed in his Lark Hill 4/10 trial in and Pike going on is huge. GLACIER MISS sizzled home last Thursday and just missed out, and is expected to swoop late again, while on-pacer DIAMOND BLUE is better than what he’s shown recently and HART TRADER can run a race fresh.

Tips: 5-2-6-1
Suggested: 5. MAGNIFICENT ANDY win.

5. MAGNIFICENT ANDY
2. DEMERITS PRIDE
6. GLACIER MISS
1. DIAMOND BLUE
8. HART TRADER

Race 3 – 2:14PM MRS MAC’S MAIDEN (1100 METRES)

DAIS simply has to go on top. As far as bad beats goes you won’t see many “badder” than this mare at her Northam 6/10 debut when beaten a lip after having no luck. Was $10 to $4.60 on that occasion, so the money was spot on, and kept out of trouble from this draw by Joe Azzoaprdi, Dais looks set to make amends. Don’t mind CATALPA as a horse and he was big late this track/distance 6/10. Blinkers go on and he’ll be launching again. ROMMEL’S WAR was rock solid in the same race and just kept coming late, while recent trial winners HE’SGOTWINGS and GIDGET THE MIDGET warrant consideration also.

Tips: 5-6-9-7
Suggested: 5. DAIS win.

5. DAIS
6. CATALPA
9. ROMMEL’S WAR
7. HE’SGOTWINGS
8. GIDGET THE MIDGET

Race 4 – 2:54PM CROWN PERTH HANDICAP (1000 METRES)

REAL DANGER will be short but deserves to be taking on this assignment. Had excuses when rolled first up and elevated significantly to record a dominant maiden win Northam 6/10, after unexpectedly finding himself railing in front. Maps to sit outside likely leader STRIKE on this occasion and control proceedings from there. Strike has to be the main threat. Just missed when resuming this track/distance and the Gangemi Bros are in a bit of form. First-upper RED INFERNO will win races this prep and looks a top three players, while POWERFUL and VICINITY round it out.

Tips: 6-1-2-3
Suggested: 6. REAL DANGER win.

6. REAL DANGER
1. STRIKE
2. RED INFERNO
3. POWERFUL
7. VICINITY

Race 5 – 3:30PM QUAYCLEAN HANDICAP (1600 METRES)

Not the strongest Class 1 you’ll come across and not out of the realms that maiden mare LADY OF BABYLON can get the job done. Hard not to notice her first-up Northam 3/10 effort, when charging home from near last on straightening, and she was black-booked way back in March when a strong debut performer also. Maps soft from this draw and can impact from there. I CAN SEE CLARA was a better run than it reads at Ascot last week and he can give this a nudge on the quick backup. GIN ‘N’ SWANIC encountered significant traffic last start and with clear galloping room will fight out the finish of this, while ROGUES POINT and SUNDAY GIN make appeal also.

Tips: 7-6-5-1
Suggested: 7. LADY OF BABYLON win.

7. LADY OF BABYLON
6. I CAN SEE CLARA
5. ROGUES POINT
1. SUNDAY GIN
10. BRING EURO
*Numbers amended after scratchings

Race 6 – 4:05PM AIRAH WA HANDICAP (1600 METRES)

BEANIE and Beaux will be eager for redemption. Was a tough watch for backers last Wednesday when a good thing beat behind Savanik over this journey, and his previous Northam victory when wide the entire was full of merit also. Is a better horse this prep and just needs a reasonable steer. HE’S ALL MIGHTY is a live hope. Needs plenty to go right with the way he prefers to race, but CJP is one jockey capable of slicing his way through a bunched field. Thought ALIMENTARIA was brave under the circumstances last start and she’s a major player also, while INDOMINUS and ROCK’N’RULER are top four hopes.

Tips: 6-5-4-2
Suggested: 6. BEANIE win.

6. BEANIE
5. HE’S ALL MIGHTY
4. ALIMENTARIA
2. INDOMINUS
7. ROCK’N’RULER

Race 7 – 4:40PM BYRON BAY PREMIUM LAGER HANDICAP (1400 METRES)

Has his knockers but EXPRESSIONIST does look placed to win first up with new trainer Adam Durrant. Has trialled twice in the lead up, with his latest being behind Saturday’s winner Real Charisma, and both of this fellow’s previous fresh results have been strong. Saved up for one run at them by Pike and Expressionist will be too strong. MAIN ENGINE is a horse than caught the eye first up and her late splits weren’t that inferior to the likes of Spritely Star and Buzzoom. Likely leader CHAMPAGNE DAME has talent and is improving with every start, while on-pace pair WORTH A RISK and WAKAN TANKA can’t be overlooked.

Tips: 4-8-10-3
Suggested: 4. EXPRESSIONIST win.

4. EXPRESSIONIST
8. MAIN ENGINE
10. CHAMPAGNE DAME
3. WORTH A RISK
6. WAKAN TANKA

Race 8 – 5:20PM ALL FLAGS SIGNS AND BANNERS HANDICAP (1100 METRES)

Anticipating most will be keen to follow Peters Investments filly MRS AMERICA, however. GOD HAS CHOSEN has the quality to make things interesting. Looked the goods for part-owner and original trainer Neil Lee in Albany last season, and trialled like a rocket for Lindsey Smith at Lark Hill 4/10. Will be getting well back and the 1100m may be a touch on the short side, but no surprise to see God Has Chosen descend upon them late. Mrs America couldn’t have done a lot more when a decisive Northam 9/10 maiden winner. Looks the obvious. GHOST WHO WALKS ran into a fair one last Wednesday and was pretty good considering, while ENTICING and UNDER THE RADAR aren’t out of calculations either.

Tips: 4-10-1-2
Suggested: 4. GOD HAS CHOSEN win.

4. GOD HAS CHOSEN
10. MRS AMERICA
1. GHOST WHO WALKS
2. ENTICING
8. UNDER THE RADAR
