Race 1 – 12:47PM RM SMITH AND SONS MAIDEN (1000 METRES)
Feel compelled to go one more time with BILLY RAY. Has obvious talent, but has done a heap wrong when getting rolled as an odds-on fave at his first two outings. The fact the stable are pressing on with him is a positive, as if the addition of Chris Parnham and a norton bit. First-upper SPIRITED SESSION showed plenty of potential last prep and should get a lovely run from gate one. LASTING IMPACT was forced to do a heap of work early when a beaten $3.50 chance last start, but can bounce back in this, while natural on-pacer ZANGIEF rolls forward and boxes on.
Suggested: 1. BILLY RAY win.
1. BILLY RAY
2. SPIRITED SESSION
4. LASTING IMPACT
Race 2 – 1:25PM TRIPLE M AVON VALLEY MAIDEN (1100 METRES)
Not a bad maiden this, but keen on the chances of EXQUISITE STAR first up. Supported her on debut back in April and she hasn’t been fully extended in two Belmont lead-up trials this prep. Looks ready to fire fresh and Troy Turner should land her in a sweet spot from this low draw. The blinkers go on first-upper IRON SHARP and expecting her to impact with an in-form Brad Parnham on board. Showed a bit last prep and has trialled up nicely recently. LIFE FOR A LIFE placed this track/distance last start and has to be considered, while expecting both WESTERN EMPIRE and KING CRUZER to be running on with strength late.
Suggested: 13. EXQUISITE STAR win.
13. EXQUISITE STAR
8. IRON SHARP
7. LIFE FOR A LIFE
11. WESTERN EMPIRE
3. KING CRUZER
Race 3 – 2:05PM NORTHAM MAZDA MAIDEN (1400 METRES)
Another competitive maiden and thinking AZTEC GOLD might be able to give this a shake. Liked her on debut but she had no luck when trapped wide and over-exerting in the mid-section, and she was sharpened up for this assignment with an easy 400m Lark Hill 19/10 trial blow out. Maps to advantage from the low draw and should go close. HOOVER has shown a bit in two trips to the races already and should appreciate the rise to 1400m. Ready to peak third up. Expecting COMEALILBITCLOSER to show some dash first up, while the likes of TIBETAN BLACK and GALLANT RANGER warrant consideration also.
Suggested: 12. AZTEC GOLD win.
12. AZTEC GOLD
10. TIBETAN BLACK
7. GALLANT RANGER
Race 4 – 2:45PM AG IMPLEMENTS HANDICAP (1600 METRES)
Not a bad option for OUQBA TED. Have been tracking him all prep since joining the Colin Webster yard and nothing finished better than he did in a fast 1500m Graduation Handicap at Ascot two weeks back. Should be able to stay within striking distance from a low draw in this small field and with clear galloping room, Ouqba Ted should be hitting the line hard. ARNIE’S BOY put in a poor one last Saturday, but no surprise to see him improve sharply on the quick backup. ZIP YOUR LIPS continues to race competitively, while the best of HOOLAHOOPS would see her figure in the finish fresh.
Suggested: 4. OUQBA TED win.
4. OUQBA TED
1. ARNIE’S BOY
2. ZIP YOUR LIPS
5. SAUCY JACK

Race 5 – 3:15PM AVON VALLEY TOYOTA HANDICAP (1400 METRES)
Thinking SAFE TO MAKEUP might be able to run a race first up for the Justin Warwick yard. Competed through a WA Oaks campaign last prep, acquitting herself well in some of the feature lead-up events and will strip fitter after a lead-up Belmont 12/10 trial. Has some class on her side and expecting her to be strong at the finish fresh over 1400m. Fellow first-upper SWIFT GONDO has to be a major player also. Improved with racing last time in work and has two trials under her belt leading into this assignment. Sparingly-raced 7YO TRADE STORM has some ability and has to be considered, while a race fit/in form BRAVE CONTENDER will be hard to beat again.
Suggested: 5. SAFE TO MAKEUP win.
5. SAFE TO MAKEUP
6. SWIFT GONDO
2. TRADE STORM
1. BRAVE CONTENDER
Race 6 – 3:45PM ENRIGHT MEMORIAL HANDICAP (1300 METRES)
Looks a two horse race between promising 3YOs KALLAROO and PANZDOWN, but quite confident Kallaroo will come out on top. Have a lot of time for this fellow and he was one of the best performances of the day when resuming at Ascot 14/10, clocking some strong closing splits in the process. Settles closer from this low draw and it is hard to oppose anything the Dan Morton stable are saddling up at present. Panzdown has his share of ability also and may be looking to control things from out in front. Won’t be a pushover that’s for sure. THREE EZE is more than capable of making his presence felt first up, while Kalgoorlie visitor BRIGHT GLOW hasn’t done a lot wrong in the Goldfields recently.
Suggested: 2. KALLAROO win.
6. THREE EZE
1. BRIGHT GLOW
Race 7 – 4:15PM TABTOUCH HANDICAP (1300 METRES)
This is quite a competitive Class 1 for the fillies and mares, and WORTH A RISK gets a good chance to go back-to-back at Northam. Was stiff not to win one last prep, but got this campaign off to a flyer three weeks back when a strong maiden victory over this journey. Expected to push forward from the high draw and should be fighting out the finish from there. SNIPPY MISS has only won the one race, but she’s much better than that and her first-up result here suggests she’s in for a successful prep. While 3YO stablemates AMERICAN CHOICE and NUHAD are talented, and come through a hot $100,000 race at Ascot 10/10.
Suggested: 3. WORTH A RISK win.
1. SNIPPY MISS
2. AMERICAN CHOICE
6. IAN’S SPECIAL

Race 8 – 4:45PM IRON JACK NORTHAM CUP (1600 METRES)
Pretty decent edition of the Northam Cup, but it was hard to look past iron-horse MASSIMO. Had a setback and missed the Hannan’s Handicap in Kalgoorlie, but showed no ill-effects when a close-up third in last Saturday’s Northerly Stakes at Ascot. Should come across from the mid/high draw and land on top of the speed, and he’s shown weight-carrying ability in the past so the 59kg shouldn’t be an issue. DANCE MUSIC stalked a searing tempo in the Northerly Stakes and did well to be beaten only 3.8L. Lookout for her giving this a nudge on the quick backup, while MONEY MATTERS, TELLEM WE’RE COMIN and PYM’S ROYALE are all considered major players also.
Suggested: 1. MASSIMO win.
6. DANCE MUSIC
3. MONEY MATTERS
4. TELLEM WE’RE COMIN
8. PYM’S ROYALE
Race 9 – 5:20PM GANNONS SPORTWEAR AND TROPHIES HANDICAP (1400 METRES)
Expecting SAMSURIAN to be really hard to beat at his third run back from a break. Ran into traffic issues at his first-up Belmont 28/09 outing and there was plenty of merit in a hot 3YO midweek event last start, finishing off well after getting too far out of his ground. Hasn’t been jumping all that well, so a clean start is important, but is Troy Turner gets him to begin, Samsurian lands on-speed and should have these covered. ACERMETRIC has a good Northam record and is expected to figure fresh beginning from gate one, while AY TEE EMM and VELAGO are in the mix also.
Suggested: 7. SAMSURIAN win.
1. AY TEE EMM
