Race 1 – 1:05PM STATEWIDE OIL MAIDEN (1300 METRES)
Siding with HINCHINMOSE in this wide-open Maiden to kick off Hannan’s Handicap Day. Ran some nice races for the Matt Scott stable when last in work and produced a slashing first-up performance at York 13/09, coming from last for a fast-closing fourth. Will settle closer from gate one, perhaps even in front, and should impact from there. PLAYING FOR KEEPS didn’t fire as a $3.20 fave last start, but he was 1400m back to 1100m second up and York can be a tricky circuit. Happy to forgive and expecting him to rebound. HYDROXIDE was huge in defeat first up when three-wide no cover the entire, while NO STOPPING ME NOW should figure in the finish also.
Suggested: 3. HINCHINMOSE win.
8. PLAYING FOR KEEPS
4. NO STOPPING ME NOW
Race 2 – 1:42PM GWN7 MAIDEN (1600 METRES)
Like the booking of Kyra Yuill on AURAE and expecting her to break through. Probably should’ve already won one this prep and endured a tough run without cover in the three-wide line last start, so you to forgive. Maps to get a much more economical run in transit and with clear galloping room Aurae should salute. TRUE ORA is the obvious main danger, catching the eye when running on into second at York 13/09. Maps back-ish again, but should still be steaming home late. DANTORIO landed on-speed and boxed on well last start, so anticipating similar positive tactics, while PROCEEDS OF CRIME should be challenging strongly for a top-four finish.
Suggested: 7. AURAE win.
4. TRUE ORA
3. PROCEEDS OF CRIME
Race 3 – 2:17PM FIFTH LEG HANDICAP (1760 METRES)
Opinions will be divided between STAADEN and MAGIC WILL REIGN, but opting to side with Staaden. Placed in Graduation Handicap in town two starts back and dominated his Class 2 rivals this track/distance last start, so dropping 1.5kg and mapping to advantage, he’s clearly going to be mighty hard to beat in this. Magic Will Rein carries the same Durrant Family colours as Staaden and has been one of the most consistent horses in Kalgoorlie all year. Few ride the track better than Mitch Pateman, so Magic Will Reign will have plenty of admirers also. Clint Johnston-Porter going on BLACK COMET is significant, while likely leader CITY STAR rounds out the top four.
Suggested: 3. STAADEN win.
2. MAGIC WILL REIGN
5. BLACK COMET
6. CITY STAR
Race 4 – 2:52PM O’REGAN GROUP INSURANCE BROKERS HANDICAP (1100 METRES)
He hasn’t been in the winner’s enclosure for 1027 days, but this could be the day GET OVER IT breaks the drought. Has been racing in good spirits since joining the Adam Durrant yard, charging late to figure in the finish at his past two outings. Looks suited down on 55.5kg and with a patient Johnston-Porter steer, Get Over It can swoop to victory. BOS TAURUS did it tough in a high-pressure Goldrush last start, but is much better suited back to 1100m against this line up. Should lead and give a good kick. Expecting GESSATO to bounce back to form, while BADGE OF COURAGE can carry weight and still make his presence felt.
Suggested: 4. GET OVER IT win.
4. GET OVER IT
3. BOS TAURUS
1. BADGE OF COURAGE
*Numbers amended after scratchings
Race 5 – 3:32PM MCDONALD’S HANDICAP (1100 METRES)
Found it hard to look past DEVINE BEAST. Won her first two in Kalgoorlie and was a good thing beat last start, with traffic issues in the straight denying her a hat-trick of wins. Has been kept fresh for this assignment by Peter Fernie and Kyra Yuill should be able to have her well positioned from this draw and ready to pounce on straightening. ZIEBELL knows only one way and should fire across from this high draw to find the rail in front. Will be paddling late, but may have established a big enough head-start to hold on. PROTECTED ACTION comes through a strong race last start and has to be considered off that result, while BUSY ONE hasn’t done a lot wrong in Kalgoorlie this year.
Suggested: 9. DEVINE BEAST win.
9. DEVINE BEAST
6. PROTECTED ACTION
2. BUSY ONE
Race 6 – 4:15PM JOHNNIE WALKER HANDICAP (1400 METRES)
LEADING MAN does struggle to win and he was a beaten $3.10 fave at his first outing for Peter Fernie last start, but this isn’t a deep race and he does have the services of top jock Mitch Pateman. Has some decent Belmont midweek form this campaign, so that certainly stacks up, and if Leading Man is going to win one this looks his race. Didn’t mind the way BLACKWOOD RIVER boxed on last start and no surprise to see him land on top of the speed and taking some running down. TRAMIKA has been racing consistently in Kalgoorlie and gets every chance from the low draw, while NORD AVENIR looks a sharp improver with senior rider Kyra Yuill climbing on board.
Suggested: 6. LEADING MAN win.
6. LEADING MAN
7. BLACKWOOD RIVER
1. NORD AVENIR
Race 7 – 4:50PM TABTOUCH HANNANS HANDICAP (1400 METRES)
MASSIMO has the 2020 Hannan’s Handicap at his mercy. What a campaign he’s had, starting 11 times since April 18 and winning four of his last five, including a decisive Farnley Stakes triumph at Belmont 12/09. Has carried weight successfully this prep, so the 59kg shouldn’t be an issue, and from this low draw Massimo looks set to own the race either out in front or right on top of the speed. If stablemate MONEY MATTERS does back up after winning at Belmont on Saturday, he’s no doubt capable of taking it up to Massimo. Fascinating to see whether he goes around or not. Class types YEAH DARDY, PYM’S ROYALE and WESTERN TEMPLE will all be in the fight for top-four finishes also.
Suggested: 1. MASSIMO win.
2. MONEY MATTERS
4. YEAH DARDY
5. PYM’S ROYALE
3. WESTERN TEMPLE
Race 8 – 5:25PM DFP RECRUITMENT HANDICAP (1300 METRES)
Really taken with the last-start win from GREAT CHARADE and he looks the horse to beat again. Did it tough three-and-four wide in transit, but he relished the galloping room and forward momentum, clearing out to record a decisive victory. John Lugg has Great Charade in the zone and this looks a terrific option for him. PURE MAGNUS steps out for the first time for Peter Fernie and has to rate among the main contenders. Wasn’t far away at Northam last time and he looks well placed against this line up. 3YO filly BUMPER HUMPER takes on the older horses with 59kg, but has the class to impact, while ABSOLUTE and ON THE TURPS warrant consideration also.
Suggested: 11. GREAT CHARADE win.
11. GREAT CHARADE
5. PURE MAGNUS
3. BUMPER HUMPER
12. ON THE TURPS
