Race 1 – 12:33PM FREE ENTRY TO BELMONT PARK PLATE (1000 METRES)
Have loved the trials from smooth-moving colt LAVERROD and expecting him to take some beating on debut. The $270,000 yearling coasted to victory in his latest Belmont 14/6 heat, appearing to have plenty in reserve, and with a reasonable run in transit he’s going to be hard to overpower. MONEY MATTERS is coming off a stylish debut win and maps to enjoy a lovely run being an expected solid tempo with Pike in the saddle. Can salute again. Slick filly MIA DOLCE has been freshened and her best certainly stacks up, while WICKLOW PRINCESS was strong late first up and the blinkers going on suits.
Suggested: 7. LAVERROD each way.
1. MONEY MATTERS
2. MIA DOLCE
9. WICKLOW PRINCESS
Race 2 – 1:13PM TABTOUCH – BETTER YOUR BET HANDICAP (1600 METRES)
Emerging talent DEIMOS stands out as the horse to beat again. Was superb first up when three wide/no cover throughout, before breezing outside leader and dominating a similar race to this last time. Anticipating similar positive riding tactics and it’s hard seeing any of these being able to get over the top of him. SNOWCHINO appears the biggest danger, with a 5.5kg pull in the weights. Had no luck at all last time and her best is good enough to impact. In-form newcomer CELTIC COURT heads to town with Pike on board and a low draw suits, while MAKE MINE CHAMPERS will be doing her best work late.
Suggested: 1. DEIMOS win.
4. CELTIC COURT
3. MAKE MINE CHAMPERS
Race 3 – 1:53PM NOLA SCHLAM 90TH BIRTHDAY HANDICAP (1200 METRES)
Excited to see some highly-regarded 3YOs squaring off and confident SHOWMANSHIP can measure up. Looked the goods at trials and didn’t disappoint on debut, clocking the best sectionals of the day to charge past subsequent winners Lipstick Flickers and False Statement. Has a big engine, an inside alley and a decent weight advantage over his main rivals. Big fan of FRED DAG and he’ll be much fitter after a strong first-up result. Respect. Boom youngster SAMIZDAT couldn’t have been more impressive first up, but high draw and 62kg are factors, while ESSENTIAL SPICE has her share of ability also.
Suggested: 7. SHOWMANSHIP win.
2. FRED DAG
6. ESSENTIAL SPICE
Race 4 – 2:28PM D’ORSOGNA-STRICKLAND STAKES (2000 METRES)
The jury is out on the outstanding GALAXY STAR after her shock Hyperion Stakes defeat, but happy to back her in to make amends in what is potentially her last start. It was obviously a surprise to see her unable to rundown GATTING two weeks back, but the previous Belmont Sprint gut-buster may have just taken the edge off her, and Team Williams are the best in the business, so confident they’ll have her ready to produce her best. Gatting will be backed to win again and deservedly so. He’s a serious racehorse. MIZLECKI and GREAT SHOT will fight it out for third and fourth again.
Suggested: 4. GALAXY STAR win.
4. GALAXY STAR
1. GREAT SHOT
Race 5 – 3:03PM KEN DYSON 80TH BIRTHDAY HANDICAP (1300 METRES)
Fairly positive 3YO fillies CAERHELAN and CITY CIRCLE will fight out the finish. Caerhelan was doing some nice work late when resuming in a strong 1000m event and is clearly suited rising to 1200m with Pike back on board. Maps to advantage from the low draw also. City Circle was heavily commissioned in this grade last time, but ran into major traffic issues in the straight. In form, race fit and should get the right run. MANKIND can run a cheeky race up in grade, especially from gate one, while DISTANT TRILOGY and PEARL TRADE come through the same race and look major contenders again.
Suggested: 11. CAERHELAN win.
12. CITY CIRCLE
2. DISTANT TRILOGY
Race 6 – 3:38PM AMELIA PARK HANDICAP (1600 METRES)
Quality 3YOs LORDHELPMERUN and THE VELVET KING look to have an edge on the older horses here, and Lordhelpmerun can get the job done. Did get all the favours in his confidence-boosting third up win, but he does look capable of elevating even further over the mile with the additional race fitness. Maps superbly from gate one and should have plenty of fuel to launch late. The Velvet King is a real talent and if allowed to free-wheel out in front, will be mighty hard to run down. BATTLE TORQUE has to be next best reunited with Pike, while DOUBLE DIGIT looms at the potential knockout.
Suggested: 6. LORDHELPMERUN win.
3. THE VELVET KING
1. BATTLE TORQUE
5. DOUBLE DIGIT
Race 7 – 4:13PM DOUG GARDENER MEMORIAL HANDICAP (1400 METRES)
Really interesting handicap this and opted to go a little wide with BUSHFIRE BLONDE. Was expected to improve second up, but the effort was big and she was arguably a good thing beat, considering she worked three wide/no cover throughout. Loves the 1400m, low draw suits and the Jarrad Noske booking is a positive. Have a strong opinion of get back/run on type SOVEREIGN TRADE and look out for him rattling home late second up. NELSON’S FLIGHT was really good in a strong race first up, while main fancies MASCHINO MISS and MOSCHARD will both be drifting back and finishing off powerfully.
Suggested: 5. BUSHFIRE BLONDE each way.
5. BUSHFIRE BLONDE
4. SOVEREIGN TRADE
3. NELSON’S FLIGHT
14. MASCHINO MISS
Race 8 – 4:50PM CROWN PERTH HANDICAP (1200 METRES)
Super ratings race to finish the card and simply had to side with STAGEMAN. Has been dealt some bad hands this prep with barriers 10, 10 and 14 respectively, but he really gets his chance to show what he’s capable of after drawing the inside alley here. Should be no excuses and he should be saluting. NEUROLOGICAL is an exciting type and he’ll have admirers first up. Impressed at the Lark Hill 24/6 trials and maps to enjoy a sweet run in transit. On-pacer FREE TRADE is very well-regarded and he’ll attract support, while MULTIVERSE and NIKITAS also have to be included among the main players.
Suggested: 11. STAGEMAN each way.
16. FREE TRADE
