Race 1 – 12:08PM FREE ENTRY TO BELMONT PARK MAIDEN (1300 METRES)
PRIZED NEMESIS looks ready to strike second up. Has had a few chances to record a maiden victory, and gone close multiple times, but this does look a suitable assignment for him after a strong-finishing first-up effort behind subsequent winner Nerodio. With a patient Mitchell Pateman ride, this fellow can charge over the top late. DRAGONFLIES was brave in the same race when racing wide throughout and just failing to gun down Nerodio. Should get a better run in transit for this draw though. On-pacer SECAIT can improve further third up, while a fresh COSTA DEL SANTO shouldn’t be dismissed.
Suggested: 1. PRIZED NEMESIS each way.
1. PRIZED NEMESIS
3. COSTA DEL SANTO
Race 2 – 12:43PM ENGINE ROOM ESPRESSO PLATE (1000 METRES)
Some particularly sharp customers engaged in this 3YO dash and happy to side with DRINKWHATYOULIKE. Put her rivals to the sword in fast time first up for her new stable at Northam 5/09, showing brilliant early speed and clearing out late. Does map to land outside likely leader MIA DOLCE, but reckon this filly has the depth to breeze and still salute. First-upper MISS WEST COAST is all class and looked ominous in a fast Lark Hill 9/09 trial win. Demands respect. As does the dazzling Mia Dolce coming off a 56-day break, while WARFISH worked home nicely when resuming at Northam.
Suggested: 5. DRINKWHATYOULIKE win.
2. MISS WEST COAST
1. MIA DOLCE
Race 3 – 1:19PM WESTSPEED PLATINUM HANDICAP (1600 METRES)
Locking in MASTER PEARL on the quick back up. Launched late at the flying Heavenly Affair two back and did well behind that mare this track/distance last Saturday, beaten only 2.4 lengths despite having to sustain a searching, wide run from the 800m. That was full of merit and he looks well placed coming back to this company. BLACK DUCATI is the likely fave and is a bit stiff not to be unbeaten. Anticipating positive tactics from the draw, should go close. Likely leader MURRAY THE BULLDOG can show some cheek, while staying types STAIRWAYTOTHEMOON and THROWDOWN will be running on.
Suggested: 7. MASTER PEARL each way.
7. MASTER PEARL
5. BLACK DUCATI
4. MURRAY THE BULLDOG
Race 4 – 1:59PM TABTOUCH – BETTER YOUR BET HANDICAP (1600 METRES)
Hard seeing any of these knocking off REGAL COUNSEL. Has been a revelation since transferring to the Kalgoorlie-based Fernie yard, winning his last four including a devastating last-start display, running the day’s fastest 400m and 200m splits to gun down In Love With Paris. The mile is a query, but if Mitchell Pateman puts him to sleep early, there should be plenty of fuel to get it done late. JEDAFFAIR can elevate significantly second up, especially up in trip. Maps to advantage also, while former stablemates ASTRONOMITE and STOICISM both have to be considered major players also.
Suggested: 2. REGAL COUNSEL win.
2. REGAL COUNSEL
Race 5 – 2:39PM GLENN MONEY 80TH BIRTHDAY HANDICAP (1400 METRES)
Difficult race to assess, with a host of genuine winning chances, but all things being equal the wayward-but-gifted VELAGO should take some beating. Trialled brilliantly at Lark Hill 26/08 and followed up with a strong fresh showing at Northam, plotting a particularly wide path in transit and hitting the line with strength over 1100m. Comes forward off that hit out and will relish the rise to 1400m. Have some time for SLICED BREAD and he can make an impact second up. Should land in the box seat. Likely leader NEXT STOP THE MOON is holding strong form, while ZERO DEMERITS is absolutely flying.
Suggested: 1. VELAGO each way.
7. SLICED BREAD
5. NEXT STOP THE MOON
8. ZERO DEMERITS
Race 6 – 3:19PM BRIAN WHEELER 90TH BIRTHDAY HANDICAP (2000 METRES)
Sticking with TOO CLOSE THE SUN. Thought he would make it three in a row last Saturday, but after enjoying a lovely run in transit, his inexperience showed under pressure late when out-muscled by the up-and-coming Bunker Buster. Capable of elevating further, stays well and he should relish the anticipated genuine tempo in this. The free-wheeling BEAUCOUNT is in good form and looks ready for the 2000m at this stage of his prep. Will take some catching. DECEPTION GAME can impact on the three-day turnaround, while GALAXY BLAZE and PROXY can both run races at longer odds.
Suggested: 4. TOO CLOSE THE SUN win.
4. TOO CLOSE THE SUN
12. GALAXY BLAZE
*Numbers amended after Final Scratchings
Race 7 – 3:55PM D’ORSOGNA HANDICAP (1000 METRES)
Smart type SOME SORT will no doubt be all the rage, but thinking CRYPTIC LOVE can knock her off with Pike in the saddle. Cryptic Love has raced well all prep and had genuine excuses when a fighting third in this grade last time. Coming back from 1300m is an obvious query, but she will be ridden quietly and if the gaps appear, she’ll have the closing speed to make things interesting. Some Sort looks well above average and ticks plenty of boxes with McNaught on board. Very hard to beat. Hard to fault WHY CHOOSE HER, EXCISE FREE can rebound second up, and don’t dismiss DIA DE LA RAZA.
Suggested: 8. CRYPTIC LOVE each way.
8. CRYPTIC LOVE
11. SOME SORT
7. WHY CHOOSE HER
4. EXCISE FREE
6. DIA DE LA RAZA
Race 8 – 4:25PM CROWN PERTH HANDICAP (1400 METRES)
Expecting CUP NIGHT to hit back hard after a shock first-up defeat. Trialled the house down at Lark Hill 19/08 and sent out a $2.40 fave when resuming two weeks back, but things didn’t go to plan when caught in a bumping duel for a significant stretch and simply wasting too much fuel in transit. Anticipating more patient tactics from this draw and if saved up for one run, he’s more than capable of charging over the top. Fan of SPILLINOVA and he’s going to give himself every chance up on top of the speed. IN LOVE WITH PARIS has to rate highly, while SPECIAL DELIVERY can impact first up.
Suggested: 4. CUP NIGHT win.
4. CUP NIGHT
3. IN LOVE WITH PARIS
2. SPECIAL DELIVERY
Race 9 – 5:00PM PRIVE FASHION PLATFORM HANDICAP (1200 METRES)
Have a strong opinion of FORCEFUL and he should take a stack of beating first up. Won twice at this level when last in work and showed he was in good order with a sharp Lark Hill 2/09 trial win, comfortably holding out the Melbourne-bound Angelic Ruler. Big, strong type who won’t be an easier ride for Jade McNaught, but he appears black-type quality and with even luck should win. ALPHA SKY is no slouch though and did start a $3.70 fave in the Bunbury Stakes. Respect first up. DUTCH SPY won too well to ignore last start, while MINUS LOOKS can fire fresh and enjoys the Belmont 1200m.
Suggested: 5. FORCEFUL win.
1. ALPHA SKY
2. DUTCH SPY
7. MINUS LOOKS
