Race 1 – 1:49PM FREE ENTRY TO BELMONT PARK MAIDEN (1400 METRES)
BERET looks the one to beat on the seven-day back up. Was heavily supported second up last week when $4.20 to $2.80, but just left herself with too much to do late when running on strong into third. The rise to 1400m looks ideal and she should be breaking through. INDIAN CHANT was doing his best work late over this track/distance last time and should be able to land a pair closer from a low draw. VENA SCHNITZEL looks capable of elevating second up and Pike going on is an obvious bonus, while first-upper POWDERBELLE showed potential as a juvenile and is worth keeping an eye on fresh.
Suggested: 8. BERET win.
1. INDIAN CHANT
4. VENA SCHNITZEL
5. LOOKS LIKE MAGIC
*Numbers amended after Final Scratchings
Race 2 – 2:24PM TABTOUCH – BETTER YOUR BET MAIDEN (1200 METRES)
Really like POWER OF ST GEORGE as a horse and expecting him to take a power of beating. Was $2.80 to $2.30 on debut and had some excuses when rolled by Eurotrip, who has raced well since. Like the way he hit the line on that occasion and he should elevate significantly with race experience and blinkers going on. Hard not to have noticed the strong trial results from MY HIDDEN JOURNEY this prep, and expecting to see him drift back and charge late first up. REAL BEAUTY was solid on debut and warrants consideration again, while MELODY’S SECRET comes through the same race as Power Of St George.
Suggested: 3. POWER OF ST GEORGE win.
3. POWER OF ST GEORGE
4. MY HIDDEN JOURNEY
9. REAL BEAUTY
8. MELODY’S SECRET
Race 3 – 2:59PM PRIVE FASHION PLATFORM HANDICAP (1200 METRES)
The highly-promising PLETTO is the obvious horse to beat. Attracted a wave of support ($2.90 to $2.20) when returning from a lay off two weeks back and while she got some advantages in running, she still stretched out impressively to score. Looks a Saturday-grade horse in the making so, with even luck, should have these covered. FAMILY DISCUSSION caught the eye when running on well first up in the same race as Pletto and should settle much closer to the speed from this low draw. OLIVIA KNOWS has no luck with three wide/no cover the entire last time, while BON VOYAGE should be running on.
Suggested: 7. PLETTO win.
3. FAMILY DISCUSSION
6. OLIVIA KNOWS
1. BON VOYAGE
Race 4 – 3:35PM ASCOT RACING CARNIVAL HANDICAP (2200 METRES)
HIGHEST REGARD showed some depth to win his maiden at Northam last Thursday and he’s going to be hard to counter again. Travelled three wide/no cover throughout on that occasion and was entitled to fade late, but he fended off all the challengers to get the job done. Expected to roll forward, find the front and fight on well late. Fellow last-start maiden winners BLOOM AWAY and CELTIC DIVA will both have their share of admirers also, although the 34 days between runs in a query on Celtic Diva, while PRECIOUS CARGO ran into a well-regarded one last time and goes close again.
Suggested: 1. HIGHEST REGARD win.
1. HIGHEST REGARD
5. BLOOM AWAY
6. CELTIC DIVA
8. PRECIOUS CARGO
Race 5 – 4:10PM HEINEKEN 3 HANDICAP (1400 METRES)
Looking forward to seeing SLICED BREAD back in action. Showed significant potential last prep when knocking off Assetro and Angelic Ruler at Ascot, and going on to hold his own in the listed Challenge Stakes. Readied for this with two lead-up trials, may even push forward from the draw and his class should come to the fore. TAP THE GO GO hasn’t been far away in two runs this prep and finished on the heels of a couple of handy ones last time. NORDIC KING looks well placed back in grade and can improve, while consistent stablemate KELLY’S SECRET is always a major player.
Suggested: 2. SLICED BREAD each way.
2. SLICED BREAD
8. TAP THE GO GO
1. NORDIC KING
3. KELLY’S SECRET
Race 6 – 4:45PM D’ORSOGNA HANDICAP (1000 METRES)
Not a bad line up this, but expecting LACEVINSKY to be too slick first up. Enjoyed an encouraging initial racing campaign and was a bit stiff not to register a Metro win when getting nailed on the line by Fairview at Ascot 19/01. Stretched out nicely in a Lark Hill 26/8 trial and looks ready to fire fresh. JENJA was heavily commissioned first up at Northam and got the job done with a smart win. Pike sticks and looks the obvious main danger. THE FINEST is racing well and looks the goods in a mid-prep 2/09 trial win, while POSITION OF POWER trialled too well 26/08 to not warrant consideration.
Suggested: 1. LACEVINSKY win.
5. THE FINEST
3. POSITION OF POWER
Race 7 – 5:25PM MRS MAC’S HANDICAP (1000 METRES)
The well-regarded BEAUTIFUL MIND returns to racing and with even luck from a potentially awkward draw, should be too classy for her opposition. Went within a nose of four straight wins at Ascot last April and has always given the impression she’s a black-type horse in the making. Didn’t mind the way CHECKERS covered the ground in his 2/09 trial win and he did run some nice races for his new stable when last in work. Low draw suits. McNaught going back on SHE’S VITAL is a plus as is gate one, while stablemates ROCKAFELLA and WEST FIFTY FOURTH can both give this a shake at their best.
Suggested: 6. CHECKERS each way.
10. SHE’S VITAL
2. WEST FIFTY FOURTH
