Race 1 – 1:24PM INITIAL PLATE (1000 METRES)
First race of the 2YO season is always a tricky one and most of the runners here have shown enough at trials to be considered top-four contenders. Last year Adam Durrant won this race with a filly coming off a 400m Lark Hill trial win and going to back him in to do it again with SHOWZALI. Liked the way she began cleanly and stretched out well late, and top jock Chris Parnham should give her a sweet run at his first mount back in WA. NICCOVI and MARCEE A LADY hail from WA’s best juvenile trainer and both have looked above average at trials, while MISS WEST COAST covers the ground nicely.
Suggested: 10. SHOWZALI each way.
5. MARCEE A LADY
6. MISS WEST COAST
Race 2 – 2:04PM DAVID GRAYS AGLINK PLATE (1400 METRES)
Locking in relative newcomer LEADING GIRL to get the better of PAGAN IMAGE. Really impressed with the closing speed Leading Girl displayed to get herself out of a jam as a $1.60 fave on debut at Northam and expecting her to be able to hold a more forward running position from barrier one. With clear running late, she should have too much dash, especially with only 54kg. Have a lot of time for Pagan Image and he’ll take some beating again, although this is his sixth run this prep. PRECIOUS CARGO was too good to ignore last start, while SCENIC CHARM was heavily supported at her midweek debut.
Suggested: 8. LEADING GIRL win.
8. LEADING GIRL
1. PAGAN IMAGE
7. PRECIOUS CARGO
9. SCENIC CHARM
Race 3 – 2:44PM WESTERN RACEPIX BELMONT HORSE OF THE YEAR HCP (1200 METRES)
Have tried to get ELECTRIC LIGHT beat at her last two, but she’s proven too good on both occasions and she looks set to enhance her already impressive record with a fifth straight victory. With William Pike committed to Peters Investments runner MASQUERADE, the gifted Chris Parnham climbs aboard and should give her the perfect run in transit from the low draw. The Rockon Tommy and Reykjavik form is hard to fault also. First-upper Masquerade has his share of ability and is the obvious danger. This looks a nice race for RECOILED, while no surprise to see sharp improvement from ZUCCHEROS.
Suggested: 2. ELECTRIC LIGHT win.
2. ELECTRIC LIGHT
Race 4 – 3:24PM BIRTHDAY STAKES (1200 METRES)
Very excited to see the unbeaten ENTICING STAR make her spring return. Charged through the grades last prep and posted some sensational figure in the process, and thoroughly deserves her opportunity in listed company. Wasn’t knocked around in her Lark Hill 25/9 trial, and she has the closing speed to sit at the rear and run over the top of her rivals with only 53kg. Railway Stakes winner GREAT SHOT resuming and is the only possible danger. Has stretched out well in two lead-up trial wins and should dictate terms out in front. Fellow first-uppers DISPOSITION and PROPERANTES round out the four.
Suggested: 5. ENTICING STAR win.
5. ENTICING STAR
1. GREAT SHOT
Race 5 – 4:00PM TABTOUCH – BETTER YOUR BET HANDICAP (1400 METRES)
Going to stick with PATROCITY. Was keen on him in a similar event last time, but he just didn’t settle for Jordan Turner and was left running on empty late, having raced on top of a very fast early tempo. Like the booking of Chris Parnham and providing he conserves energy early, he can bounce back to winning form in this. A KNIGHT OF PRO cashed in on a positive Shaun McGruddy ride last start, returning to peak form in the highest-rating race of the day. Goes good and maps to advantage again. First-upper ARCADIA PRINCE will have plenty of admirers, while JUST LIKE FIRE can swoop late fresh.
Suggested: 10. PATROCITY each way.
1. A KNIGHT OF PRO
4. ARCADIA PRINCE
3. RAGAZZO D’ORO
*Numbers amended after scratchings.
Race 6 – 4:35PM DEVIL’S LAIR HANDICAP (1300 METRES)
This could be the day for the real REBELLIONAIRE to stand up. Has been a fairly trying horse to follow over the journey, but the stable appears to be on top of the issues that have troubled him in the past, and he should’ve finished much closer second up in midweek company last time. With a clean getaway from a low draw, Rebellionaire lands on speed and gives this a shake. Likely fave BOLD SUCCESS has really been putting in this prep, but will be over-bet and needs luck. BIG CAROLINE is holding peak form and must be considered, while SIGIL is a lock for your novelties.
Suggested: 7. REBELLIONAIRE each way.
2. BOLD SUCCESS
1. BIG CAROLINE
Race 7 – 5:10PM CROWN PERTH OPENING DAY – 20 OCTOBER HANDICAP (1000 METRES)
Have some time for CHESTEN FLYER and he can knock off more fancied opposition first up. Has a solid overall record and has strong formlines around quality opposition during his 3YO season. Liked the way he stretched out behind the exciting Special Reward in a Lark Hill 29/9 trial and Chesten Flyer should have the gate speed to hold a forward position from his low draw. Quality type SHOWCASE looks the horse to beat after an impressive lead-up trial win and is a good opportunity for back in-form apprentice Brodie Kirby. NIGHT VOYAGE and IMPERIAL VENUS continue to race well in similar events.
Suggested: 9. CHESTEN FLYER each way.
9. CHESTEN FLYER
1. NIGHT VOYAGE
4. IMPERIAL VENUS
Race 8 – 5:45PM AMELIA PARK LODGE HANDICAP (1600 METRES)
Rolling with ROCKON TOMMY to win again. Liked him at his first attempt over this track/distance last time and he got the job done comfortably, although the tempo suggests it wasn’t a true test of 1600m. Still, the stable has him right back on top of his game and this fellow has the tactical speed to find a suitable forward position from a high draw. NELSON’S FLIGHT breezed on top of a fast tempo second up and just felt the pinch late. Should benefit from that solid hit out. DOUBLE DIGIT is coming out of a high-rating midweek win and drops 4.5kg, while ELEGANT BLAST is suited at 1600m third up.
Suggested: 5. ROCKON TOMMY 1 x 3 units.
5. ROCKON TOMMY
6. NELSON’S FLIGHT
10. DOUBLE DIGIT
3. ELEGANT BLAST
