The Leg Up: Belmont Preview – Wednesday 22 July 2020

Race 1 – 12:39PM FREE ENTRY TO BELMONT PARK PLATE (1000 METRES)

Expecting PANZDOWN to win on debut. Has looked the goods at trials, with his most recent Belmont 6/07 1000m heat win being very impressive. Gets the services of W. Pike from a low draw and the cutaway being in play suggests traffic issues shouldn’t be a factor. GUARDED has his share of raw ability, but is still quite the handful, giving Steve Parnham a tough steer first up. Brother Brad is the regular rider and goes back on, and no surprise to see him find the rail in front and give a kick. JANAURA clung on in a similar race to this last start and has to be a major player again, while there was plenty of merit in the debut effort from PINBALL PLAYER.

Tips: 7-2-1-4
Suggested: 7. PANZDOWN win.

7. PANZDOWN
2. GUARDED
1. JANAURA
4. PINBALL PLAYER

Race 2 – 1:14PM AMELIA PARK PLATE (1000 METRES)

Plenty of hopes in the second division of the 2YO Plate and opting to side with AGENT KENSINGTON. Was a big watch this track/distance first up and ran on strongly late to narrowly miss a place in a blanket finish. Can settle closer from this low draw and with a clear crack at them, she has the closing speed to get the job done. Fast filly MADAM TORIO has been kept fresh since her last-start disappointment, but her previous Belmont 1000m demolition showed what she can do at her best. Expected to rebound. Nicely-bred first-starter CONGREVE ROCKET is coming off a 6.2L Lark Hill trial win, while anticipating sharp improvement from DEVINE BEAST second up.

Tips: 6-1-3-10
Suggested: 6. AGENT KENSINGTON each way.

6. AGENT KENSINGTON
1. MADAM TORIO
3. CONGREVE ROCKET
10. DEVINE BEAST

Race 3 – 1:49PM WESTERN RACEPIX MAIDEN (1000 METRES)

Found this a tricky one to assess and with low-confidence settled on HIDDEN PLANET first up. Led them up from gate nine before being nabbed late on debut over this track/distance, and while she’s been off the scene for quite some time now, have to trust trainer Nev Parker has her ready to fire fresh. Should give her supporters a run for their money. MOGUL MAGIC is resuming for a new stable and was hard in the market at all three starts during her initial racing campaign. Has some strong formlines and will take some beating. LA CHIAVE competed well at Northam first up and the form out of that race has held up well, while no surprise to see ENDURING MOMENT run a race fresh.

Tips: 6-7-3-5
Suggested: 6. HIDDEN PLANET win.

6. HIDDEN PLANET
7. MOGUL MAGIC
3. ENDURING MOMENT
5. SO SWAY

Race 4 – 2:24PM VALE SCALES OF JUSTICE HANDICAP (1700 METRES)

It does look like LA VINA versus BEAT THE BRO take two and confident we’ll see a similar result with La Vina coming out on top. The Lindsey Smith stable is irresistible at present, saddling up bulk winners over the last month, and this promising filly should relish the genuine tempo likely to be set by the front-running FUHRER. Expected to relish the 1700m and La Vina wins again. Beat The Bro certainly has his share of talent, knocking off Giant Leap first up and making La Vina sweat last start. Plenty will believe he can turn the tables. Fuhrer is suited coming back in grade and Chloe Azzopardi is a good booking, while consistent filly NATIVE CHIMES won’t be far away.

Tips: 2-3-1-6
Suggested: 2. LA VINA win.

2. LA VINA
3. BEAT THE BRO
1. FUHRER
6. NATIVE CHIMES

Race 5 – 3:00PM TABTOUCH BETTER YOUR BET HANDICAP (1300 METRES)

Nice second-up option for the front-running OHBEEH. Sat outside leader when resuming three weeks back and boxed on well to place in a fairly strong midweek 3YO contest. Comes forward off that run, should work his way to the lead from the high draw and will take some running down. Big watch on BRUTUS MAXIMUS making his return to racing after over 600 days on the sidelines. Has had obvious issues, but has been readied for this with two lead-up trials and his best certainly stacks up. Pike going on DIAMOND TRADE is noteworthy, while ZIP ZAM ZOOM can rebound after a disappointing second-up result.

Tips: 2-1-5-3
Suggested: 2. OHBEEH win.

2. OHBEEH
1. BRUTUS MAXIMUS
5. DIAMOND TRADE
3. ZIP ZAM ZOOM

Race 6 – 3:35PM BUDGET CAR & TRUCK RENTAL HANDICAP (2200 METRES)

Have to stick with dominant last-start winner COMPLETED. The NSW import made a mess of them over at Pinjarra 9/07, when having his third start in WA, and the way he ploughed through the rain-affected going was impressive. If Completed holds that kind of form he really should be too strong again. SMART FASCINATOR relished cover and Pike going on in her Northam maiden win. Steps back up to 2200m, but gets a nice smother in transit and racing too well to ignore. Natural on-pacer XAARMERIT was brave second up and has to rate among the main fancies stretching out to a middle distance, while AMERICAN SOUL was strong at the end of 2200m last start.

Tips: 1-6-3-5
Suggested: 1. COMPLETED win.

1. COMPLETED
6. SMART FASCINATOR
3. XAARMERIT
5. AMERICAN SOUL

Race 7 – 4:10PM CROWN TOWERS HANDICAP (2100 METRES)

Have complete faith in the elite Team Williams operation to get DELTA BELLE to win second up over 2100m. Sent out a $3.20 fave when resuming at Pinjarra 9/07, but she was only just getting warmed up at the end of 1400m. Will enjoy an economical run from this low alley and the cutaway in play means Pike won’t have to go for her too early. The Brett Pope pair FAIR GLORY and THE LAST BREEZE will have their share of admirers, and appear the logical danger to the on-top selection, while DIAMOND TONIQUE is racing really well this campaign and is expected to roll forward and box on bravely late.

Tips: 5-6-3-10
Suggested: 5. DELTA BELLE win.

5. DELTA BELLE
6. FAIR GLORY
3. THE LAST BREEZE
10. DIPLOMAT EXPRESS

Race 8 – 4:45PM SIMON MERRITT 40TH BIRTHDAY HANDICAP (1000 METRES)

So much early speed engaged in this 1000m scamper, but EXCELLENT DREAM does look the fastest of them. Found the front from gate 13 this track/distance first up and cleared out for a comfortable victory, and with similar aggressive tactics this sharp type is going to take some catching again. Fellow 3YO WEAPONSON has some class about him but won’t be an easy steer for apprentice Kristy Bennett. Still, with even luck this fellow should impact. Not a lot went right for SEMIGEL when a $3.60 fave first up and he can elevate significantly, while GUNFLINT and MELODY’S SECRET have to be considered major players also.

Tips: 2-3-10-12
Suggested: 2. EXCELLENT DREAM win.

2. EXCELLENT DREAM
3. WEAPONSON
10. MELODY’S SECRET
12. ALCINA
