Race 1 – 12:34PM GLENROY CHAFF MAIDEN (1000 METRES)
VRANYO looks ready to break through. Ran into a promising one in Cobbanco first up this track/distance two weeks back and maps to land in a similar prominent running position. Comes forward second up and looks suited back in maiden company. HARMIKA has a bright future and lookout for her rattling home late first up. Likely leader CRITICAL ALTITUDE is knocking on the door and will take some running down, while stablemate MISSILE was an eye-catching first up and THE COOLAKIN KING has shown enough at trials to suggest he can impact on debut.
Suggested: 7. VRANYO win.
5. CRITICAL ALTITUDE
4. THE COOLAKIN KING
Race 2 – 1:09PM CROWN PERTH MAIDEN (1650 METRES)
Is this the day for LA GALEXIA? Worked to the line well when resuming at Pinjarra and has had no luck in two outings since, held up the majority of the straight on each occasion. Stable jockey Chris Parnham finally gets to sit on her and with even luck from a midfield running position, La Galexia can get it done. SESSIONS PEAK s the obvious and he’ll give himself every chance up on top of the speed. Formlines around him read well. OCEAN AURA can make a splash with blinkers going on and a low draw third up, while MERCURIUS exceeded expectations first up and VALBANI won’t be far away.
Suggested: 13. LA GALEXIA win.
13. LA GALEXIA
3. SESSIONS PEAK
11. OCEAN AURA
Race 3 – 1:44PM TABTOUCH – BETTER YOUR BET HANDICAP (2200 METRES)
Expecting CAFE NERA to win again. Victorious at two of her past three at Pinjarra, this mare is a real stayer and Holly Watson’s 2kg claim will come in handy at the end of 2kg. Maps to enjoy an economical passage and should have a heap of fuel left to launch late. CHOOSE FREEDOM comes back in grade for this assignment and was only a length away from Cafe Nera two starts ago. BELAFONTE BOY is another class dropped and he maps to enjoy the run of the race from gate two. RHYTHM STAR is honest but a high draw makes this an awkward assignment for 4kg claimer Luke Campbell, while no surprise to see FROSTY HEART fight out the finish.
Suggested: 2. CAFE NERA win.
2. CAFE NERA
6. CHOOSE FREEDOM
7. BELAFONTE BOY
1. RHYTHM STAR
4. FROSTY HEART
Race 4 – 2:19PM RELIABLE ASSET MAINTENANCE HANDICAP (1200 METRES)
Not a bad 3YO midweeker and looks a reasonable option for TOPPA THE MOUNTAIN. Everything that could go wrong just about did last start, with the saddle slipping mid-race, and for him to be beaten only 2.1L was significant. Might lead or race outside leader here, and should take some beating from there. COBBANCO goes good and is searching for a fourth straight win. Loses Jason Whiting and has a potentially sticky draw, but his class has to be considered. GALAXY CAT was excellent when resuming down the Pinjarra Straight 1000 against the older horses, while GORGEOUS GOSSIP ran her heart out in the Magic Millions Trophy and GAMBLER’S GOLD hasn’t done much wrong at all this prep.
Suggested: 3. TOPPA THE MOUNTAIN win.
3. TOPPA THE MOUNTAIN
7. GALAXY CAT
5. GORGEOUS GOSSIP
4. GAMBLER’S GOLD
Race 5 – 2:54PM QUAYCLEAN HANDICAP (1200 METRES)
Peters Investments WA Oaks prospect RELIABLE CHOICE looks the horse to beat. Made an impression at two Pinjarra runs in December, with the Playz With Fire form holding up very strongly. Can hold a midfield running position from this low draw and just needs clear galloping room in the straight. GUARD THE SAFE met with strong support last start and should’ve finished a length or two closer. O’LARA’S PRINCE was another to have a chequered passage in the straight last start, with senior hoop Chris Parnham booked to take over, while DAZZLING DANE is showing promise and first-upper MARZIPAN LAD will have admirers also.
Suggested: 7. RELIABLE CHOICE win.
7. RELIABLE CHOICE
2. GUARD THE SAFE
1. O’LARA’S PRINCE
5. DAZZLING DANE
3. MARZIPAN LAD
Race 6 – 3:34PM FREE ENTRY TO BELMONT PARK HANDICAP (1200 METRES)
Testing times for ARCADIA GRACE followers but happy to give her another opportunity to show us what she can do. Made a big impression in her Northam Maiden debut victory and wasn’t quite ready to tackle some of the tougher 3YO assignments last October. Surprisingly couldn’t reel them in late as a $1.65 fave first up at Belmont 26/01, but expecting her to elevate enough coming back to 1200m second up to secure the win. WISE WORDS rolls forward from the draw and gives a good kick. GORGEOUS GUS is another who can land on speed and figure in the finish, while SIR RACHELOT likely leads first up and MY NORINA maps similarly to her last start maiden win.
Suggested: 5. ARCADIA GRACE win.
5. ARCADIA GRACE
10. WISE WORDS
3. GORGEOUS GUS
1. SIR RACHELOT
7. MY NORINA
Race 7 – 4:15PM FURPHY BUNBURY CUP AT ASCOT 5TH MARCH HANDICAP (1300 METRES)
Don’t mind LORD AUGUSTUS each way in an open race. Raced well last prep and had no luck when kicking off his campaign two weeks back, when never really getting a decent crack at them. Expecting more positive tactics from the low draw second up and he can settle forward and give this a nudge. ZOUDINI was massive in defeat over 1000m last week and while better suited at 1200m, maps to settle rearwards from this high draw. DISENGO can certainly figure first up, while PEPPER ASSAULT is suited back in grade and SICHERN is coming off a decisive maiden victory.
Suggested: 6. LORD AUGUSTUS win.
6. LORD AUGUSTUS
8. PEPPER ASSAULT
5. IRRITABLE RODNEE
*Numbers amended after scratchings
Race 8 – 4:50PM AUTUMN ASCOT RACING CARNIVAL 19TH MARCH TO 25TH APRIL HANDICAP (1400 METRES)
HE’S A LUCKY LAD is one of a number of Adam Durrant’s WATC Derby hopefuls and he can get his 2022 campaign off to a winning start here. Is coming off a 60-day let up when beaten a lip in a two-horse war by tough bugger Black Chips over 2100m at Ascot, and will benefit greatly from his Lark Hill 8/02 trial result when competing in the fastest heat of the session. Settles mid-back from this draw but with an uninterrupted flow on the turn and he let down strongest late. PHONEME likely follows the on-topper everywhere he goes and looks the main danger. GREAT CHARADE capitalised on a messy race last start but has to be a major contender again, while AL MAGICO rolls forward and features, and PEPPIJACK is an interesting runner for new trainer Grant Williams.
Suggested: 1. HE’S A LUCKY LAD win.
1. HE’S A LUCKY LAD
4. GREAT CHARADE
5. AL MAGICO
Race 9 – 5:30PM MRS MAC’S HANDICAP (1650 METRES)
Going to have another look at KOHLI. Was super keen on him last start and after ending up in a sticky spot in transit, he was unable to get a proper crack at them in the straight. East coast form suggests the mile is as far as he wants, and he ‘ll need a patient steer with 60kg from the high draw, but if they’re making ground on the day Kohli will get his chance. MAMA TEMBU made a big impression when winning on debut last week. Maiden to Class 3 can be quite a leap but connections have big plans for her this prep. PRIVATE SCENE lands on top of the speed and runs her usual honest race, while FIRE GODDESS will appreciate Shaun McGruddy and WILD GALAH is holding peak form.
Suggested: 1. KOHLI win.
10. MAMA TEMBU
11. PRIVATE SCENE
6. FIRE GODDESS
8. WILD GALAH
