The Leg Up: Belmont Preview – Wednesday 15 July 2020

Race 1 – 12:39PM FREE ENTRY TO BELMONT PARK MAIDEN (1300 METRES)

Hard not to notice the second-up effort from MY HIDDEN JOURNEY at Pinjarra 25/06 and this looks a suitable follow-up assignment especially with Pike picking up the ride. Will need some additional luck in transit, drifting back towards the rear from a high draw, but he certainly has the closing speed to run over the top late. CHOKSLAM certainly deserves to win one soon and his Class 1 result behind Tiff Has Spoken last start looks really strong. HINDSIGHT BIAS was a month between runs last start and may not have been on the best part of the track that day. Comes forward off that and won’t be far away, while DOUBLE SPICE has his share of ability.

Tips: 2-8-4-3
Suggested: 2. MY HIDDEN JOURNEY each way.

8. CHOKSLAM
4. DOUBLE SPICE
3. TRADE MASTER

Race 2 – 1:14PM PENINSULA DINING ROOM PLATE (1200 METRES)

This is the first division of the 2YO Plate and it certainly looks a competitive contest. Happy to be siding with MORE after just failing to overhaul Janaura when heavily supported on debut last Wednesday. Confident she’ll enjoy the rise to 1200m and with even luck in transit this lovely-bred filly can get the job done. First-upper QUEEN BROWN already has the score on the board and has to be respected. Liked her Belmont 22/06 trial hit-out and all her form last prep looks quite strong. BREKKY WITH A BANG caught the eye on debut and ran his heart out second up at Northam, while KEEP YOUR FEET competed well as a $3.60 chance first up and maps sweetly from the draw.

Tips: 10-9-3-1
Suggested: 10. MORE win.

10. MORE
9. QUEEN BROWN
3. BREKKY WITH A BANG
1. KEEP YOUR FEET

Race 3 – 1:49PM TABTOUCH BETTER YOUR BET PLATE (1200 METRES)

A bit of talent going around in this second division of the 2YO Plate and BILLY AIN’T SILLY does look the one. Was really keen on him on debut and while the effort was strong, he couldn’t quite get the better of All Day Session and Born To Rule in a three-way photo. Will benefit from the experience and rising to 200m looks ideal also. Really liked what CLASSIC MAGNUS has shown in her two lead-up trials and she looks poised to impact first up. EMPIRE REIGN appeared sharp in his Belmont 6/07 trial win and is a possible leader on debut, have to respect the second-up improvement from MORE SNITZEL, while no surprise to see first-starter AL QUEPONE running on strong.

Tips: 2-9-5-1
Suggested: 2. BILLY AIN’T SILLY win.

5. EMPIRE REIGN
1. MORE SNITZEL
4. AL QUEPONE

Race 4 – 2:24PM PERTH RACING CLUB MEMBERSHIP HANDICAP (1000 METRES)

Some sharp customers engaged in this 3YO dash and the speedy SWEETASSA should find the front and prove very hard to run down. Too slick for her opposition first up at Northam and was brave against Wine Night and Amelia Bedelia this track/distance last start, with that form stacking up very well since. Victoria Cover’s 3kg claim could be vital late also. ELITE STREET is very well regarded by the Morton stable and rebounded strongly to break through at his second run this prep. Will have a heap of admirers. SATURDAY SUN comes back to the 1000m and some key gear changes have been made, while stablemate WEAPONSON has ability and is capable of firing first up.

Tips: 6-3-4-2
Suggested: 6. SWEETASSA win.

6. SWEETASSA
3. ELITE STREET
4. SATURDAY SUN
2. WEAPONSON

Race 5 – 3:00PM HEINEKEN 3 HANDICAP (1200 METRES)

Rare to see a last-start Maiden winner stepping straight into Class 3, but if any operation can pull it off it will be Team Williams and Peters Investments with EXPRESSIONIST. Promised plenty last time in, but his first-up Pinjarra 25/06 win suggests the regally-bred 3YO has taken a significant leap forward this prep. Taking on some decent opposition, so there’ll be plenty wanting to lay, but still expecting Expressionist to give this a big shake. UNIBRO could surprise a few, with his last run better than what it reads on paper. FALSE STATEMENT goes good, eastern-states import PHONEME has to be respected first up, and the best of I AM SPARTACUS puts him in the finish.

Tips: 5-12-1-3
Suggested: 5. EXPRESSIONIST win.

12. UNIBRO
1. FALSE STATEMENT
3. PHONEME
2. I AM SPARTACUS

Race 6 – 3:35PM AMELIA PARK HANDICAP (1200 METRES)

A heap of winning possibilities in the Class 3 Handicap and siding with GRAND DESIGN. Went really well in a high-rating race first up, hitting the line hard and that hit-out should bring her forward nicely for this. Settles rearwards from the high draw, but with an uninterrupted passage she can launch over the top of them late. Cerise And White first-upper DARK MISSION returns from a WA Oaks campaign and covered the ground well in her Lark Hill 29/06 trial win. Expected to make her presence felt. AMELIA BEDELIA was brave in her latest Northam win and gives herself every chance on top of the speed, while talented types PUT A SPELL ON YOU and PLETTO have to be respected also.

Tips: 6-2-3-9
Suggested: 6. DARK MISSION each way.

3. PUT A SPELL ON YOU
9. PLETTO

Race 7 – 4:10PM SEPPELT WINES HANDICAP (1400 METRES)

Very hard to go past POSITION OF POWER. Built nicely through his campaign to record a decisive third-up victory, justifying strong support in betting in the process. This looks an ideal follow-up assignment, especially considering the sweet draw, and he looks one of the better plays of the day. ONE SHORT appreciated the drop back to this grade last start and the Double The Pro form has held up well since. INFLATION hasn’t quite lived up to expectations, but this isn’t a bad opportunity for him to return to peak form, while the likes of PEPPIJACK and GUNNAGO are in the mix also.

Tips: 4-7-8-11
Suggested: 4. POSITION OF POWER win.

4. POSITION OF POWER
7. ONE SHORT
8. INFLATION
11. PEPPIJACK
1. GUNNAGO

Race 8 – 4:45PM CROWN TOWERS HANDICAP (1400 METRES)

Tough race to finish up a decent midweek card and opting to roll with BALLADEER on top. Has endured an interrupted first prep in WA, but didn’t mind the way he finished off behind Tiff Has Spoken last start and expecting him to elevate further here. Has been sluggish away recently, so hopefully he doesn’t get too far back from this low draw, but if within striking distance on straightening, Balladeer should go close. OUR INSIDER got plenty of favours, but won well enough at his WA debut. Positive tactics from the high draw should have him poised to strike. No surprise to see likely leader BLUE HORSE take some catching, while THE ITALIAN JOB and ZIP ZAM ZOOM are both major players also.

Tips: 2-4-10-1
Suggested: 2. BALLADEER each way.

2. BALLADEER
4. OUR INSIDER
10. BLUE HORSE
1. THE ITALIAN JOB
5. ZIP ZAM ZOOM
