The Leg Up: Belmont Preview – Wednesday 12 August 2020

Race 1 – 1:14PM WESTERN RACEPIX MAIDEN (1200 METRES)

WARDIAN should take some beating. Liked her Belmont 6/07 trial win and she was edged out narrowly on debut at Pinjarra by All On Black, with that horse performing well at his follow-up assignment. This high draw isn’t ideal, but with a patient ride early, she can close over the top late. DON’T ARGUE BUSTER rebounded swiftly last start, almost breaking maiden status after racing outside leader in transit, and expecting similar positive tactics from this alley. He can box on. BARNSLEY BOY may end up in front and give a kick, while first-upper ROSSO TEMPESTA his the line well enough in his Lark Hill 27/07 trial.

Tips: 8-1-2-6
Suggested: 8. WARDIAN win.

2. BARNSLEY BOY
6. ROSSO TEMPESTA

Race 2 – 1:49PM FREE ENTRY TO BELMONT PARK MAIDEN (1000 METRES)

This early-season 3YO contest is a tough one to assess and with low-confidence ended up locking in AIN’T I A WOMAN on top. Has shown significant speed at trials and looked nice-and-balanced in her 400m Lark Hill 27/07 heat win with Lucy Warwick on board. Expected to jump, run and should be in the finish. First-uppers GRACIENNE and RECITING showed plenty of promise promise during their initial racing campaigns and both are smart enough to impact. GUARDED hasn’t had a lot of luck in two runs this prep, but has the talent to figure, while first-starter ENTICING has been well-educated at trials and has the gate speed to lead from a low draw.

Tips: 12-11-10-1
Suggested: 12. AIN’T I A WOMAN win.

10. RECITING
1. GUARDED
4. ENTICING

Race 3 – 2:24PM AMELIA PARK HANDICAP (1650 METRES)

Has the makings of a trap race and without a strong opinion have sided with BURN ONE DOWN. Should be ready to tap into some peak form third up over the mile and the Adam Durrant yard has flicked the switch recently. Apprentice Madi Derrick is flying and she can get Burn One Down to keep rolling. Happy to forget DIVINE QUEST went around at Northam last time, with her previous form this prep all being solid. Small field and low draw enhances her claims also. FAIR ONE won decisively at Kalgoorlie 19/07 and may end up landing in front, while SMART FASCINATOR can figure prominently coming back to the mile.

Tips: 2-5-1-4
Suggested: 2. BURN ONE DOWN each way.

2. BURN ONE DOWN
5. DIVINE QUEST
1. FAIR ONE
4. SMART FASCINATOR

Race 4 – 3:02PM ASCEND SALES TROPHIES HANDICAP (1300 METRES)

Rare to see an early-season 3YO taking on the older horses, but EMPIRE REIGN still looks placed to win. Heavily commissioned second up and didn’t let his supporters down, clearing out late in a dominant display. Should get a suitable run on the leader’s back and only needs galloping room to salute again (will be super short though). SATURDAY SUN has been a bit of a tease over the journey, but his latest placing behind Pletto reads well. Gets 3kg off his back and this low draw should suit. Likely leader COMFORT ME is being stretched out to 1300m, but is still capable of boxing on late, while SIMONELLY was brave last start when enduring a tough, wide run throughout.

Tips: 5-4-1-8
Suggested: 5. EMPIRE REIGN win.

5. EMPIRE REIGN
4. SATURDAY SUN
1. COMFORT ME
8. SIMONELLY

Race 5 – 3:37PM FURPHY HANDICAP (1000 METRES)

Hard to see EXCELLENT DREAM not winning again. Has cleaned up his rivals this track/distance at both runs back from a break and has enjoyed teaming up with apprentice Victoria Corver. May be able to lead, but even if he gets crossed by CLASSY LASSY, the pace should be strong enough to create space for Excellent Dream to improve into swinging for home. NOBELIUM has run big races in better company than this and he was rock-solid in a similar event to this last start. The slick Classy Lassy is always a consideration in these 1000m contests, while no surprise to see REACTION run a cheeky race fresh.

Tips: 1-6-7-9
Suggested: 1. EXCELLENT DREAM win.

1. EXCELLENT DREAM
6. NOBELIUM
7. CLASSY LASSY
9. REACTION

Race 6 – 4:15PM MUMM CHAMPAGNE HANDICAP (1650 METRES)

Nice option for CONQUERED ZONE. Was hard in the market third up at Northam 30/07, but didn’t see daylight at any stage in the straight and should’ve won or at least run second to Gunnago. Lucy Warwick should be able to find a suitable on-pace running position from this low draw and with clear galloping room Conquered Zone should be too strong. Hard to fault the efforts of natural on-pacer BURNING MAGIC, who continues to try hard deep into her prep. Suited with C Azzopardi on and has to be a consideration. Liked the way eastern-states import PHONEME hit the line last time out, ARAGAIN is coming off a strong Pinjarra win, while keep an eye out for WITHOUT REASON steaming home late.

Tips: 3-7-4-12
Suggested: 3. CONQUERED ZONE win.

3. CONQUERED ZONE
7. BURNING MAGIC
4. PHONEME
12. ARAGAIN
6. WITHOUT REASON

Race 7 – 4:55PM TABTOUCH BETTER YOUR BET HANDICAP (1400 METRES)

STEVIE’S WONDER gets the nod. Trialled the house down at Belmont twice last month, before a solid first-up performance behind emerging type Expressionist two weeks back. That run should tighten him up nicely and if they’re running-on on the day, Stevie’s Wonder is more than capable of coming from near last and winning. BRUTUS MAXIMUS produced an encouraging return after a lengthy absence last start. With natural improvement he’s going to go close. SENTIMENTAL QUEEN cantered in a Northam maiden last start and can measure up to this grade, while the best of GREAT HEIST and LOCOMOTIVE would see them take some beating also.

Tips: 4-3-11-1
Suggested: 4. STEVIE’S WONDER each way.

4. STEVIE’S WONDER
3. BRUTUS MAXIMUS
11. SENTIMENTAL QUEEN
1. GREAT HEIST
2. LOCOMOTIVE
