The Leg Up: Belmont Preview – Saturday 8 August 2020

Race 1 – 11:42AM FREE ENTRY TO BELMONT PARK MAIDEN (1000 METRES)

Following up (again) with UNCANNY TIMING. Has been rather costly to follow as a beaten favourite at his past four outings and did appear to have every chance first up at Northam 30/07, but just hoping he can find a length with that hit-out under his belt. Maps ideally again from this alley and should be going close. Was keen on OHSUMI when resuming three weeks back and he almost pinched it. Should hold the lead again and comes forward with the additional race experience. ENDURING MOMENT met with strong support first up and boxed on after racing three-wide no cover, while first-upper NURHACI looks like drifting back and surging late.

Tips: 2-4-6-3
Suggested: 2. UNCANNY TIMING win.

2. UNCANNY TIMING
4. OHSUMI
6. ENDURING MOMENT
3. NURHACI

Race 2 – 12:22PM TABTOUCH WESTSPEED PLATINUM HANDICAP (1200 METRES)

PLETTO stands out. Produced a brave performance when returning from injury two back and was backed as if unbeatable last start, when overcoming a few anxious moments early to dominate her rivals late. No Pike on this occasion, but Jarrad Noske has won on her before and should be able to steer her to victory. Have some time for SEA WAR and expecting him to make a splash first up. Backing up after trialling super over 1000m on Monday and this looks a nice option for him. PARIS REPORT can rebound after putting in a poor one second up, while possible leader DON’S LEGACY will be fitter and should box on into the top four.

Tips: 5-7-3-1
Suggested: 5. PLETTO win.

5. PLETTO
7. SEA WAR
3. PARIS REPORT
1. DON’S LEGACY

Race 3 – 1:02PM HAPPY 30TH BEAU PLATE (1400 METRES)

Sticking with BILLY AIN’T SILLY. Has been an unconventional campaign so far, but this fellow is very well regarded by the Colin Webster stable and rated highly when leading throughout to defeat Empire Reign over 1200m last start. With a clean getaway he should find the front again and from there it’s going to take a fair effort to get past him. QUEEN BROWN was devastating with the blinkers on second up, blowing her rivals away. Should get a sweet run from this draw and get the last crack at Billy Ain’t Silly. Liked the second-up elevation from SURVEILLANCE and expecting him to come further forward, while WARCIDIUM put in a blinder first up.

Tips: 3-4-5-7
Suggested: 3. BILLY AIN’T SILLY win.

3. BILLY AIN’T SILLY
4. QUEEN BROWN
5. SURVEILLANCE
7. WARCIDIUM

Race 4 – 1:42PM NGAWYNI STAKES (1400 METRES)

Hard to look past MASSIMO. Is deep into his prep but continues to show his class, digging deep behind rising star Inspiration Girl last start after being caught in a high-pressure speed battle in the early-and-middle stages. Should get a lovely run, either railing in front or in the slipstream of WRINKLY and will be extremely hard to beat. Under the quality handicap conditions Wrinkly drops 0.5kg despite winning in this ratings band last start. Clearly suited and Massimo will want to bring his A-game to knock him off. Thinking ABDICATOR can run a race back in grade and up to his preferred 1400m, while JERAFT is holding peak form and has to be considered on the quick backup.

Tips: 6-2-9-7
Suggested: 6. MASSIMO win.

6. MASSIMO
2. WRINKLY
9. JERAFT
7. WESTERN TEMPLE

Race 5 – 2:18PM HAPPY BIRTHDAY ROBYN HANDICAP (1600 METRES)

Reckon PRINCE TURBO is just about ready to fire. Blackbooked him at both 1400m runs this prep and really should be closing in on a peak performance rising to the mile. Last time the blinkers went on he saluted, and while the draw isn’t ideal, it wouldn’t surprise to see positive tactics in a race with an expected faster-than-average tempo. Natural on-pacer FUHRER bounced back to peak form with a crushing midweek win that rated highly on the day. Team will be eager to find the front and dominate again. BLACK SHADOW is building into his campaign and will appreciate a mile third up, while possible leader MAJINIKA may prove hard to get past with in-form junior Madi Derrick on board.

Tips: 2-3-6-1
Suggested: 2. PRINCE TURBO each way.

2. PRINCE TURBO
3. FUHRER
6. BLACK SHADOW
1. MAJINIKA

Race 6 – 3:00PM BERNARD COUCH MEMORIAL HANDICAP (1200 METRES)

Intriguing contest and opting for NERODIO on top. The 35 days between runs is not ideal, but his last run was simply monstrous when splitting Long Beach and Indian Pacific, with both those horses going on to win there next starts impressively. Should land in a sweet spot without burning fuel early from this draw and if on song, Nerodio goes close. Looking forward to seeing the gifted LEADING GIRL back in action after being sidelined through injury. Lead-up trial effort was good, but it will still be a mighty effort for her to win. Reckon BEL MY PAGO gives this a nudge with a senior hoop back on board, while REGAL COUNSEL and PUT A SPELL ON YOU have to be considered also.

Tips: 3-9-1-10
Suggested: 3. NERODIO win.

3. NERODIO
9. LEADING GIRL
1. REGAL COUNSEL
10. PUT A SPELL ON YOU

Race 7 – 3:35PM SEPPELT WINES HANDICAP (1000 METRES)

A bit of quality rememerges in the form of MONEY MATTERS. Won twice at listed level last prep and is coming off a topnotch Lark Hill 27/07 trial win. 1000m has to be a query first up, but this fellow is a very fast horse and if ridden accordingly it’ll take significant speed to knock him off. That could be in the form of 1000m specialist front-runner WE’VE GOT DREAMS. One of the fastest beginners in WA, this mare will appreciate Kyra Yuill back on board and should give a strong kick as always. PEARLS AND PRAWNS recaptured some peak form this track/distance third up and has to be respected, UNDISCLOSED moved well in her Belmont 3/08 mid-prep trial and SUPER MAXI is suited down in grade.

Tips: 5-6-7-3
Suggested: 5. MONEY MATTERS win.

5. MONEY MATTERS
6. WE’VE GOT DREAMS
7. PEARLS AND PRAWNS
3. UNDISCLOSED
2. SUPER MAXI

Race 8 – 4:10PM AMELIA PARK HANDICAP (1400 METRES)

Expecting most to go again with DARK MISSION, but happy to be siding with TIFF HAS SPOKEN. Has enjoyed strong form all campaign and very nearly upset some extra smart customers last Saturday week, falling a neck short of Captain Kink. All the form around him stacks up and with a clean getaway from this low draw, Tiff Has Spoken should have a field-position advantage over his main rivals. Dark Mission was a beaten $1.80 fave last week, but that race was a farce and you simply have to forgive. Better suited at 1400m and she’s going to be hard to deny late. PLAYING MARIKA and DEVOTED STAR will be doing their best work late, while possible leader CHOICE COMMAND can run a cheeky race.

Tips: 5-6-4-9
Suggested: 5. TIFF HAS SPOKEN win.

5. TIFF HAS SPOKEN
6. DARK MISSION
4. PLAYING MARIKA
9. CHOICE COMMAND

Race 9 – 4:50PM CROWN TOWERS HANDICAP (2100 METRES)

Have followed him all prep and simply have to go again with SOWAR. Is in ripping form and really could’ve won three of his four starts this campaign, including his first attempt at 2100m last start when held up an impeded at crucial stages. S McGruddy back on suits and that last-start grounding should top him off nicely for this assignment. AXEL ‘R’ EIGHT was $7 to $4 at his first outing since April 2019 last start and boxed on bravely into third. That was some effort resuming over 2100m and he’ll take some beating. As will QUEEN TAKES KING who ticks plenty of boxes, while BONNEVILLE BLACK and THROWDOWN can both challenge for top-four slots also.

Tips: 4-6-3-11
Suggested: 4. SOWAR each way.

4. SOWAR
6. AXEL ‘R’ EIGHT
3. QUEEN TAKES KING
11. BONNEVILLE BLACK
2. THROWDOWN
