The Leg Up: Belmont Preview – Saturday 27 June 2020

Race 1 – 11:58AM FREE ENTRY TO BELMONT PARK PLATE (1000 METRES)

Will be good to see very well-regarded juvenile BILLY AIN’T SILLY in action after an elevated temperature delayed his scheduled racing debut two weeks back. Has created a buzz with two strong trial wins, especially his Belmont 8/06 1000m performance, and should land in a sweet position following likely leader and MADAM TORIO in transit. Billy Ain’t Silly looks the goods and expected to win. Madam Torio looms as his biggest danger, with race experience and plenty of raw talent. Was completely dominant first up and must be respected. GINGER GREEN looks the pick of the first starters, having shown up at trials, while BORN TO RULE won a similar race last start and is an obvious major player.

Tips: 6-9-8-3
Suggested: 6. BILLY AIN’T SILLY win.

6. BILLY AIN’T SILLY
9. MADAM TORIO
8. GINGER GREEN
3. BORN TO RULE

Race 2 – 12:35PM ASCEND SALES TROPHIES HANDICAP (1300 METRES)

The much-hyped WINDSTORM did what he had to when saluting as a $1.30 fave second up and should be similar odds to repeat the dose. The powerhouse Peters Investments operation has been in full swing in recent weeks and Windstorm is one of the jewels in their crown, so he really should get getting the job done with a minimum of fuss. Expecting him to elevate significantly with the winkers added too. WAR GOD is the second pick, having strong Laverrod and Festival Miss form only two starts back. Low draw is ideal. FIRE MAKER and NELSON’S FLIGHT filled the placings behind Windstorm last time, and have first four claims again.

Tips: 8-3-6-5
Suggested: 8. WINDSTORM win.

8. WINDSTORM
3. WAR GOD
6. FIRE MAKER
5. NELSON’S FLIGHT

Race 3 – 1:15PM TABTOUCH WESTSPEED PLATINUM HANDICAP (1400 METRES)

This looks set up sweetly for ZEPHYR QUEEN to lead throughout. Led and cruised to victory two back, but couldn’t find the rail in front last start and was left a sitting duck for the very smart Western Pride. With a clean getaway, Zephyr Queen should simply control proceedings from out in front. POSITION OF POWER does look the only real danger. Should be peaking third up rising to 1400m, but will need a slice of luck to slot in from the draw. BEAT THE BELL sprouted wings to salute midweek last start and her form prior was decent also, while BARTRADER is race fit/in form and looks suited back to 1400m.

Tips: 2-3-6-5
Suggested: 2. ZEPHYR QUEEN win.

2. ZEPHYR QUEEN
3. POSITION OF POWER
6. BEAT THE BELL
5. BARTRADER

Race 4 – 1:55PM GLENROY CHAFF HANDICAP (1400 METRES)

Gifted filly BRIGHT DIAMOND hasn’t had to wait long to avenge a surprise defeat last Saturday. Went under as a $1.85 fave, but did have some genuine excuses and shouldn’t have lost any admirers. This is another nice option for her, drawn sweetly down on 54.5kg, so with a even luck it’s hard seeing them being able to hold her out over the 1400m. Have a lot of time for PUCKAPUNYAL though and no surprise to see her run a mighty race, having stretched Bright Diamond first up. Big fan of LEVITATE and his Indian Pacific formlines really stand out, while don’t write off MASSIMO, who had no luck last week and should be able to find the rail in front for the first time this prep.

Tips: 5-7-2-10
Suggested: 5. BRIGHT DIAMOND win.

5. BRIGHT DIAMOND
7. PUCKAPUNYAL
2. LEVITATE
10. THREE EZE

Race 5 – 2:42PM HAHN SUPERDRY-STRICKLAND STAKES (2000 METRES)

No reason why PERFECT JEWEL can’t win again. You know what the say about mares in form, well few are racing better than this 5YO, coming off brilliant Belmont Sprint and Hyperion Stakes wins. Clearly loves Belmont and the sting out of the track, and has a G2 2100m WFA placing to her name, so the trip won’t be an issue. Locking in a Cerise and White quinella with Perth Cup winning mare MISSISSIPPI DELTA ready to peak third up over the 2000m, while it looks like it’s up to Impressing Racing duo THE VELVET KING and GATTING to take it up to the Team Peters at what may be their last WA runs before a transfer to Victoria.

Tips: 7-8-4-1
Suggested: 7. PERFECT JEWEL win.

7. PERFECT JEWEL
8. MISSISSIPPI DELTA
4. THE VELVET KING
1. HUMIDOR

Race 6 – 3:20PM SCHWEPPES HANDICAP (1600 METRES)

Found it hard to look past COSTA DEL SANTO. Got the job done in a head-bobber this track/distance two back and was one of the best performers of the day at his follow-up 13/06 outing, taking late ground off the well-regarded Serenity Bay. Always needs a bit of luck as a get back/run on type, but he has some impressive weapons and with a clear crack at them, should swoop over the top. Pike hops on SUBLIME IMAGE for her second-up assignment. Fitter, drawn low and suited up to the mile. PORPHYRIO was massive in defeat over 2100m last start when three-wide no cover throughout from gate four, while tough mare SKINNEN TINS is racing with heart and must be a first four contender.

Tips: 2-5-7-3
Suggested: 2. COSTA DEL SANTO win.

2. COSTA DEL SANTO
5. SUBLIME IMAGE
7. PORPHYRIO
3. SKINNEN TINS

Race 7 – 3:50PM AMELIA PARK HANDICAP (1000 METRES)

ESSENTIAL SPICE well-and-truly stands out as the horse to beat. The Belmont specialist was sharpened up for her winter return with a 8/06 barrier trial blow out and the Pearce Bros will no doubt have her ready to let rip fresh. Pike should be stalking the leading division from gate one and if the gaps appear, she’ll simply to too sharp late. Gangemi Racing are well represented and SARACINO looks the pick of their trio. Ran some big races last prep and trialled well enough recently to suggests he can impact first up. NIGHT VOYAGE has had no luck at all in two Belmont 1000m runs this prep so don’t rule him out of contention, while FIRE AND RAIN reminded us of his ample talents last Saturday.

Tips: 5-6-11-8
Suggested: 5. ESSENTIAL SPICE win.

5. ESSENTIAL SPICE
6. SARACINO
11. NIGHT VOYAGE
8. GUNS OF NAVARONE
*Numbers amended after scratchings

Race 8 – 4:20PM CROWN PERTH HANDICAP (1000 METRES)

Big finishing duo SILKINIZE and DEVOTED STAR will be fancied to fight this one out, and leaning towards Silkinize to deny the all-conquering Cerise And White. Like the way the David Harrison yard has his their straps recently and this 3YO has more than his share of talent, with a Lark Hill 2/06 trial confirming he’s in really good order. With clear galloping room he can launch to victory. Fellow first-upper Devoted Star will settle rearwards from the outside alley, but certainly has the jets to propel herself into the finish late. FALSE STATEMENT is no slouch either and he can win without surprising, while PURE DYNAMITE flies fresh, trialled nicely recently and is a must for your exotics.

Tips: 3-8-12-9
Suggested: 3. SILKINIZE win.

3. SILKINIZE
8. DEVOTED STAR
12. PURE DYNAMITE
9. ENDOVANERA
*Numbers amended after scratchings

Race 9 – 4:50PM VALE RON NICOL HANDICAP (2100 METRES)

Plenty of possibilities in the “Get Out” but confident ROMAN FLIRT can measure up to this level. Has been unstoppable in the lower grades since teaming up with William Pike, recording four straights wins, with her most recent being her strongest. Will have to do it without “The Wizard” on this occasion, but Chris Parnham is the man for the job and Roman Flirt will give this a mighty shake. DIVINE SHADOW is in outstanding form and probably should’ve won his last three, but could be set up for another hard-luck story from this draw. Like the booking of Paul Harvey on VOLKSWAGON FRANK, while Cerise And White stablemates DARK CHOICE and PICTURE PERFECT must be respected also.

Tips: 12-1-11-3
Suggested: 12. ROMAN FLIRT each way.

12. ROMAN FLIRT
1. DIVINE SHADOW
11. VOLKSWAGON FRANK
3. DARK CHOICE
2. PICTURE PERFECT
