The Leg Up: Belmont Preview – Saturday 1 August 2020

Race 1 – 12:16PM TABTOUCH WESTSPEED PLATINUM MAIDEN (1200 METRES)

Long-time prominent rider Troy Turner is back in the saddle this week after over four months on the sidelines, and has a terrific opportunity to record a metro win with FIRE GODDESS. Has been well fancied at both Northam runs this prep with stable apprentice Victoria Corver on board, but the addition of a senior rider, and not having to lead, should see Fire Goddess elevate enough to break through. GOODBYEFEDS is the obvious major danger, especially with Pike going on, having hit the line hard over 1000m first up. Gate one suits PETITE LA FEMME, while SOUND AWAKE has the formlines to make an impact.

Tips: 6-1-7-8
Suggested: 6. FIRE GODDESS win.

6. FIRE GODDESS
1. GOODBYEFEDS
7. PETITE LA FEMME
8. SOUND AWAKE

Race 2 – 12:56PM VALE HARVEY CROSSMAN PLATE (1000 METRES)

Looks like being another monster day in the saddle for William Pike and he should get on the board early with exciting type PANZDOWN. Couldn’t have done a lot more on debut, when clearing out for a dominant victory this track/distance, and he maps to enjoy a similar stalking run in transit. With clear galloping room, he should pack too many guns. High-quality filly STARFIELD IMPACT simply has to be respected and she’s more than capable of challenging with 60kg first up. Was considered one of WA’s top five juveniles last season. CLAIRVOYANCE impressed on debut this track/distance and certainly won’t be a pushover, while anticipating a strong first-up showing from HOW’S THE SERENITY.

Tips: 2-1-4-8
Suggested: 2. PANZDOWN win.

2. PANZDOWN
1. STARFIELD IMPACT
4. CLAIRVOYANCE
8. HOW’S THE SERENITY

Race 3 – 1:36PM CROWN PERTH HANDICAP (2100 METRES)

Crucial booking with William Pike going on to BURNING PRIDE. “The Wizard certainly holds the key to this mare, piloting her to all six of her wins (from only 10 rides), and she does look really well placed after her strong second placing in a stronger race last start. Should be peaking at her third run for new trainer Holly Taylor and Burning Pride is the one to beat. MAROCCHINO was super-competitive during the winter 3YO feature series and maps to get a lovely run in transit down on 54.5kg. DARK PROSPECT should find this easier than what he’s faced recently also, while expecting to see GANGBUSTER figure prominently rising in distance with the blinkers going back on.

Tips: 2-8-7-1
Suggested: 2. BURNING PRIDE win.

2. BURNING PRIDE
8. MAROCCHINO
7. DARK PROSPECT
1. GANGBUSTER

Race 4 – 2:13PM BARRY MCGOUGAN 70TH BIRTHDAY HANDICAP (1600 METRES)

Looks the right race for NOT TO BE MIST. Was a beaten $2.10 fave third up in a similar event to this last start, but lost no admirers when running on strongly from last in a race that certainly favoured the on-pace brigade. If Pike can land him a pair closer from this alley, Not to Be Mist really should run right over the top of these. FRED DAG comes through the same Belmont 18/07 and he was a bit stiff on that occasion. He’s the main danger, just can’t see him coming from behind Not to Be Mist. MANKIND tackles the mile for the first time, but should get every chance from this low draw, while LORDHELPMERUN can improve sharply second up without surprising.

Tips: 3-6-4-1
Suggested: 3. NOT TO BE MIST win.

3. NOT TO BE MIST
6. FRED DAG
4. MANKIND
1. LORDHELPMERUN

Race 5 – 2:55PM QUAYCLEAN HANDICAP (1300 METRES)

Went searching for a runner to rain on Pike’s parade, and landed on BEAUTIFUL MIND. Have a lot of time for this Jungle Dawn Classic winner and while she put in an ordinary one first up, pretty confident she can elevate significantly against this line up. The better draw certainly helps and if she can tap into her peak form, she’ll take some beating. SERENITY BAY will have most people’s attention, coming off a really strong effort behind the likes of Inspirational Girl and Massimo last week. That race rated through the roof and Pike back on Serenity Bay is another tick, while POSITION OF POWER and CRYSTAL SPIRIT round out the top four.

Tips: 1-8-4-2
Suggested: 1. BEAUTIFUL MIND each way.

1. BEAUTIFUL MIND
8. SERENITY BAY
4. POSITION OF POWER
2. CRYSTAL SPIRIT

Race 6 – 3:25PM SEACORP HANDICAP (1200 METRES)

Difficult to look beyond DARK MISSION. Was devastating first up from an aborted WA Oaks campaign, weaving her way through the field and still clocking the fastest final 400m and 200m splits of the day. Would be more confident over 1400m, but Dark Mission should get a tempo to suit and if the gaps come, good luck holding her out. REWRITE THE STARS is really starting to fulfill her significant potential. Loved the way she let down to win last start and Dark Mission wouldn’t want to be off her game at all. APOLLO is racing career-best and maps ideally, while the talented FALSE STATEMENT has a sticky draw to overcome, and first-upper PATROCITY is coming off a topnotch Belmont 20/07 trial.

Tips: 5-2-3-8
Suggested: 5. DARK MISSION win.

2. REWRITE THE STARS
3. APOLLO
8. PATROCITY

Race 7 – 4:00PM JOCKEY CELEBRATION DAY SPRINT (1000 METRES)

Happy to be siding with FLOYD in this competitive $100,000 feature sprint. This fellow loves the Belmont 1000m and showed he was ready to let rip first up with a nice Belmont 20/07 trial win. Has run some big races against quality opposition in his last two preps and Floyd could get the new Chris & Michael Gangemi training partnership off to the best possible start. ESSENTIAL SPICE displayed brilliant closing speed to win the Beaufine Stakes, but can she reproduce the same effort with 5kg more. Still looks the horse to beat. Expecting sharp improvement from the brilliant JERICHO MISSILE second up on a Good 4, while 1000m specialists GUNS OF NAVARONE and MERVYN warrant consideration also.

Tips: 5-3-10-7
Suggested: 5. FLOYD each way.

5. FLOYD
3. ESSENTIAL SPICE
10. JERICHO MISSILE
7. MERVYN

Race 8 – 4:35PM AMELIA PARK HANDICAP (1000 METRES)

Looking forward to seeing boom sprinter CLIFFS OF COMFORT back in action. Made quite the impression in his three all-the-way wins last prep, absolutely smashing the clock on each occasion and cleaning up some well-regarded opposition in the process. Trialled nicely alongside rising star Free Trade at Belmont 20/07 and if ridden like the best horse, he should simply be too powerful first up. SILKINIZE was mighty in defeat this track/distance last start, launching late. Nice pick-up ride for Pike and Silkinize appears the only real danger to the fave, while the likes of SHINJU and AMELIA’S ON FIRE can make things interesting at their best.

Tips: 7-10-6-9
Suggested: 7. CLIFFS OF COMFORT win.

7. CLIFFS OF COMFORT
10. SILKINIZE
6. SHINJU
9. AMELIA’S ON FIRE

Race 9 – 5:10PM GO RACING FOR FREE BEFORE THE FOOTY HANDICAP (1600 METRES)

Funny old race to end Jockey Celebration Day, but it does really look set up for MONTELENA. Has burned her supporters at both runs back from a break, but there has been merit in both performances and all the form around her stacks up strongly. 28 days between runs isn’t ideal, but Montelena dos look to have a class edge on these and with a nice smother in transit should find a way. BOMBAY STYLE got under the guard last start, but that’s two wins on the trot, and the beaten opposition reads well also. Gate one enhances his claims also. BOBCAT JOHNNIE had some excuses last week and he can impact on the quick backup, while ACONITE and FIRE MAKER are capable of challenging strongly also.

Tips: 11-3-5-1
Suggested: 11. MONTELENA win.

11. MONTELENA
3. BOMBAY STYLE
5. BOBCAT JOHNNIE
1. ACONITE
6. FIRE MAKER
