The Leg Up: Ascot Preview – Saturday 26 October 2019

Race 1 – 12:23PM WESTSPEED PLATINUM MAIDEN (1400 METRES)

This race is well-and-truly up for grabs, but with a reasonable run in transit NEAT ACTION should be going close. Posted some encouraging results last prep and was close up when resuming in a tougher assignment two weeks back, so if he’s kept within striking distance he can work home over the top late. Likely leader FROSTY BELLE is on the quick back up after boxing on well enough at Bunbury on Sunday. Fellow on-pacer BOLSHOI GAL was in the market first up, but had genuine excuses. Can rebound with blinkers and Pike on, while REXFORD put in an even effort last time and maps to advantage.

Tips: 2-6-7-3
Suggested: 2. NEAT ACTION win.

2. NEAT ACTION
6. FROSTY BELLE
7. BOLSHOI GAL
3. REXFORD

Race 2 – 12:58PM IRISH DAY MAIDEN (1200 METRES)

Another tricky maiden to navigate, with a heap of winning chances, eventually decided to roll with CHOKSLAM. After a smart trial win, liked her on debut last Sunday and she worked home well in a particularly fast race for that grade. Blinkers going on is a big tick and with clear galloping room, should be hard to hold out. MEGACHINO should’ve gone close to saluting first up, encountering traffic issues at various stages. Major player. KITGUM was a bit stiff first up at Bunbury and all the form out of that race warrants consideration, while DRAGONFLIES and RAPID TRANSIT are also in the mix.

Tips: 10-3-5-2
Suggested: 10. CHOKSLAM each way.

10. CHOKSLAM
3. MEGACHINO
5. KITGUM
2. DRAGONFLIES
6. RAPID TRANSIT

Race 3 – 1:42PM TABTOUCH – BETTER YOUR BET PLATE (1000 METRES)

Expecting the four race-experienced juveniles to fight this out and TOO SPICY to come out on top. Beaten a lip on debut by stablemate BUMPER HUMPER when sent out a $5.50 chance, but really looks advantaged on the map and should get every chance to turn the tables. No surprise to see an improved performance from ALMATALK. Chris Parnham was aboard in trials and may hold the key to this filly. Bumper Humper was unbeaten at trials and made a winning debut, but a lot has to go right to win again from this draw, while DATALKA performed above expectations on debut and has to be considered.

Tips: 6-7-2-4
Suggested: 6. TOO SPICY win.

6. TOO SPICY
7. ALMATALK
2. DATALKA
4. GALAHAD

Race 4 – 2:27PM GUINNESS HANDICAP (1400 METRES)

MAJINIKA should lead and take some running down. Rejuvenated since joining Ash Maley’s stable, this fellow stretched high-quality pair Cup Night and The Velvet King first up this track/distance two weeks back and that form certainly stacks up. Just needs a well-judged McNaught ride to salute. WESTERN TEMPLE does struggle to win and is coming off a 28-day break, but should a tempo to suit and maps to advantage. Two runs this prep have been full of merit. Surprisingly SPILLINOVA couldn’t find the front last Saturday, but still stuck on well late, while anticipating sharp improvement from FREO.

Tips: 1-4-6-2
Suggested: 1. MAJINIKA win.

1. MAJINIKA
4. WESTERN TEMPLE
6. SPILLINOVA
2. FREO

Race 5 – 3:07PM DEVIL’S LAIR HANDICAP (1800 METRES)

This looks the right race for STOICISM. Ran well behind subsequent winners Jedaffair and Harry Thomas first up and appeared to be a good thing beaten when pocked at a vital stage at Kalgoorlie last time. Should land in a prime running position from the low draw, well weighted and looks the obvious on-top selection. MISSILE LAUNCH was brave when wide throughout in a stronger race last time. Has a class edge on most of these. MOSSERATTI continues to race consistently deep into his prep, while DECOY NOXIOUS and SCINTILLATING are both capable of making things interesting late.

Tips: 6-1-9-2
Suggested: 6. STOICISM win.

6. STOICISM
1. MISSILE LAUNCH
9. MOSSERATTI
2. DECOY NOXIOUS
11. SCINTILLATING

Race 6 – 3:45PM SCHWEPPES HANDICAP (1100 METRES)

This is another head-scratcher on a difficult card, but UNI TIME is a horse with plenty of talent and certainly has the weapons to salute fresh. Does map to settle in the back half, so will need things to fall into place, but he has the turn-of-foot to put himself into contention and looks well placed down on the 54kg minimum. Harvey Racing mean business first up with former boom galloper BLACK SABBATH, rolling with William Pike and blinkers first time. Lead-up trial was good and would win this comfortably at his best. And don’t be surprised to see DAM READY and BEAT THE DEVIL elevate.

Tips: 10-6-3-5
Suggested: 10. UNI TIME win.

10. UNI TIME
6. BLACK SABBATH
3. DAM READY
5. BEAT THE DEVIL

Race 7 – 4:20PM TELETHON HANDICAP (1200 METRES)

SOPHIE’S SONG should be impacting first up. Showed some fortitude to sustain a nine-start previous campaign, winning twice and matching motors with some smart opposition. Sharpened up for this with a Lark Hill 7/10 trial and with a clean getaway from the low draw, should be afforded every chance by Chris Parnham. SILKINIZE is an exciting prospect, but the outside alley and junior rider are obvious queries. Still expecting his class to shine through. Fan of FORGOTTEN STAR and both her and ROCKY PATH are expected to be swooping late, while SPIRIT AND FIRE is a must for your exotics.

Tips: 3-11-9-13
Suggested: 3. SOPHIE’S SONG each way.

3. SOPHIE’S SONG
11. SILKINIZE
9. FORGOTTEN STAR
13. ROCKY PATH
1. SPIRIT AND FIRE

Race 8 – 4:57PM D’ORSOGNA-BELGRAVIA STAKES (1200 METRES)

Pretty keen to follow William Pike’s lead and side with SPECIAL CHOICE. Descended late to win first up at Bunbury, displaying outstanding closing speed, and while this is harder, she’s clearly gifted enough to measure up. Begins well enough to take advantage of the low draw and the blinkers on is a clear sign of intent. PLATINUM BULLET was huge in the 1000m Classic last time when wide throughout, but still attacking the line with strength. Suited from good gate, has to rate highly. While CELEBRITY QUEEN, JERICHO MISSILE and DIG DEEP can all win, but will need to overcome tricky draws to do so.

Tips: 11-10-9-2
Suggested: 11. SPECIAL CHOICE win.

11. SPECIAL CHOICE
10. PLATINUM BULLET
9. CELEBRITY QUEEN
2. JERICHO MISSILE
1. DIG DEEP

Race 9 – 5:35PM CROWN PERTH HANDICAP (1500 METRES)

Wide-open affair and ended up settling on the progressive GO CRYING. Has certainly taken a step forward this season and it was hard not to be impressed by his most recent result, running on strong despite traffic issues and covering additional ground. Should land a pair or two closer from the draw and give looks set to give this a shake. EBONY MAGI is chasing a third straight win and should get every opportunity to claim the hat trick. Flying this prep for Trevor Andrews. BLACK DUCATI has ability and always attracts plenty of support, while ZERO DEMERITS and BEAT THE BELL may provide value.

Tips: 2-5-6-7
Suggested: 2. GO CRYING each way.

2. GO CRYING
5. EBONY MAGI
6. BLACK DUCATI
7. ZERO DEMERITS
9. BEAT THE BELL
