Race 1 – 11:54AM COOL RIDGE PLATE (1000 METRES)
Can’t see any reason why smart filly PRETTY STYLE won’t win again. Has been simply too fast for her rivals at both starts to date, and expecting her to cross, lead, control the race and utilise her turn-of-foot. Stable’s in a terrific form also. SILKINIZE has plenty of talent, but wasn’t entirely convincing when saluting on debut. Did a few things wrong when fairly green on that occasion, but the race experience is significant. Really liked the way HIGH RANGE stretched out to lead and win his Lark Hill 1/4 trial, while fellow first-starter FOREST WAR is another to have impressed at trials.
Suggested: 1. PRETTY STYLE win.
1. PRETTY STYLE
5. HIGH RANGE
4. FOREST WAR

Race 2 – 12:29PM FURPHY MAIDEN (1200 METRES)
This looks a nice first-up option for BOYAGIN and expecting him to take some beating. Was big on debut this track/distance last December, and he moved well when leading and winning a Lark Hill 25/3 trial. Anticipating positive tactics with Pike on board fresh and the Pope stable have his their straps recently. CRYPTO is expected to attract plenty of support after being a moral beaten when $1.50 at Geraldton last start. Nice enough horse and should get the right run for a back in-form Chris Parnham. MEGAZONE was held up at a crucial stage last time and is a major player, as is LUKE’S CHOICE.
Suggested: 7. BOYAGIN win.
3. LUKE’S CHOICE
Race 3 – 1:14PM D’ORSOGNA HANDICAP (1600 METRES)
Tricky race to assess and ended up siding with UNIVERSAL MAE each way. Been competing well in midweek company and really caught the eye behind GEIGER GEM last start, rattling home late with the third-fastest final 200 metres of the day. With clear galloping room from the low draw, she can make an impact. No surprise to see NEW AGE rebound after a sub-standard 2100-metre effort last start. Suited back to the mile in this smaller field, and at her best will take some beating. In-form on-pacer GEIGER GEM will be hard to get past again, while GOLD ARTISAN can run a cheeky race second up.
Suggested: 7. UNIVERSAL MAE each way.
7. UNIVERSAL MAE
2. NEW AGE
1. GEIGER GEM
5. GOLD ARTISAN
Race 4 – 1:54PM PEPSI MAX HANDICAP (1800 METRES)
Looks a race in two between ARCTIC STREAM and FRIARESQUE, and opting for Arctic Stream on top. Has looked back in peak form with two strong results to kick off his campaign and will no doubt appreciate rising to 1800m. Comes through a very fast 1600m race and has the perfect platform to launch third up. Friaresque hasn’t won for 637 days, but his three runs since joining Lindsey Smith have been rock-solid and his Ascot 1800m profile stacks up. LIKE A BUTTERFLY launched late this track/distance last time and just missed. Warrants consideration, as does an in-form TOUCH OF SILVER.
Suggested: 6. ARCTIC STREAM win.
6. ARCTIC STREAM
2. LIKE A BUTTERFLY
4. TOUCH OF SILVER
Race 5 – 2:34PM MORLEY GROWERS MARKET-RACONTEUR STAKES (1500 METRES)
Simply can’t look past CUP NIGHT. Been keen on him at both runs this prep and he hasn’t let his supporters down, unleashing his trademark burst to knock off some reasonable opposition. Clocked the fastest final 200m and 400m splits of the day last start, so he has serious closing speed, and with a even luck should be too strong again. REBEL KNIGHT is coming off a setback when scratched due to a floating mishap on the way to the Ascot 30/3 meet, but his previous results suggests he must be respected. FINAL HEARING has plenty of class, while CLASSIC PRO is no slouch either.
Suggested: 1. CUP NIGHT win.
1. CUP NIGHT
3. REBEL KNIGHT
2. FINAL HEARING
4. CLASSIC PRO
Race 6 – 3:14PM SCHWEPPES TONIC HANDICAP (1800 METRES)
Went looking for something to beat him, but kept coming back to BEAUCOUNT. Jockey Ryan Hill finally got the tactics spot on aboard the notorious tearaway leader last start, rating him evenly early, before letting him loose with 800m to go. Won with a bit in reserve also, so with similar a similar game plan it’s going to be hard to run him down. LAUFEY didn’t settle for replacement rider Pat Carbery last time, but no surprise to see him rebound with Dan Staeck back aboard. MAGICAL CHARM returns from a let up and low draw suits, while SPIRITUAL WARRIOR and MAKE MINE CHAMPERS will be strong late.
Suggested: 1. BEAUCOUNT each way.
2. MAGICAL CHARM
7. SPIRITUAL WARRIOR
Race 7 – 3:50PM TABTOUCH-BETTER YOUR BET HANDICAP (1200 METRES)
Good contest this and backing in DIABLERIE to turn the tables on SPECIAL REWARD. This pair fought out the finish of a very fast race this track/distance last time, and Diablerie looks very well suited dropping 5kg. Maps to enjoy a sweet run in transit and new trainer Brock Lewthwaite has this fellow in career-best form. Special Reward was heavily commissioned first up and justified the support with a strong win. Very talented 3YO and he’s obviously the horse to beat. Really liked the Mungrup Stud Stakes effort from JUST ACT NATURAL, while SEEKER is holding form and maps to advantage.
Suggested: 8. DIABLERIE win.
11. SPECIAL REWARD
2. JUST ACT NATURAL
Race 8 – 4:25PM SCHWEPPES-W.A.T.C. DERBY (2400 METRES)
Only bad luck stands in the way of REGAL POWER replicating older brother Action in winning the G2 WA Derby. Showcased his staying prowess with a dominant Melvista Stakes victory, clearing out to win easily in very fast time for the 2200m. Pike is likely to ride him patiently from the high draw, but with an uninterrupted passage in transit Regal Power really should be too good. Liked the Melvista Stakes effort of WITHOUT REASON and the low draw really brings him into contention. Likely leader COCKNEY CREW will run a race out in front, while WA Oaks winner DARK CHOICE has to be respected.
Suggested: 1. REGAL POWER win.
1. REGAL POWER
4. WITHOUT REASON
3. COCKNEY CREW
9. DARK CHOICE
Race 9 – 5:00PM PENFOLDS HANDICAP (1100 METRES)
Intriguing short-course handicap to finish WA Derby Day and thinking this could be a suitable race for MY LAINA. Has raced well over the Ascot 1100m in the past, and is coming off a booming third in midweek company last start. Clocked the standout sectionals on the day, so she’s clearly in good order, and if the luck falls her way, she can give this a shake. Sharp filly DOUBLE BUBBLE didn’t quite meet market expectations second up, but expecting her to rebound. Fellow on-pacer M’LADY trialled brilliantly at Lark Hill 1/4, while SHOWCASE will need luck, but is a weapon fresh.
Suggested: 15. MY LAINA each way.
15. MY LAINA
10. DOUBLE BUBBLE
