The Leg Up: Ascot Preview – Saturday 23 October 2021

Race 1 – 12:36PM IRISH DAY PLATE (1000 METRES)

This is the second 2YO race of the new season and thinking a first-starter in SNOWDOME can upset the fancied race-experienced duo of KOSTA’S CROWN and POT SHOT. A $180,000 yearling purchase, Snowdome has won each of his two education trials including an impressive Lark Hill 950m heat win on Monday. Looks the part and moves smoothly, so expecting Snowdome to perform on debut. Kosta’s Crown and Potshot ran one-two in the Initial Plate after being the two main players in betting. Both are genuine winning chances, with no surprise to see REVITUP show up on debut from a low draw, while COSMOPOLITAN GIRL ran her heart out two weeks back.

Tips: 4-2-1-9
Suggested: 4. SNOWDOME win.

4. SNOWDOME
2. KOSTA’S CROWN
1. POT SHOT
9. REVITUP
7. COSMOPOLITAN GIRL

Race 2 – 1:14PM TABTOUCH WESTSPEED PLATINUM HANDICAP (1500 METRES)

Might be reaching, or at least a start early, but can see OUR IDYLL being the value. Has competed in much stronger assignments than this and her first-up Northam 3/10 effort was better than it reads, dashing home with some sharp late splits. Utilising Holly Watson’s 3kg claim is a tick and with a reasonable run from an awkward draw, Our Idyll’s class can prevail. Hard to be too bullish about CASTILLO DEL LAGO as he just can’t seem to get it done. Recent big screen form isn’t too bad though and he still has to be a consideration up on top of the speed. SWEET STRAWBERRY attacked the line with ferocity at Northam 3/10 but this looks likely to be run at a more genuine clip, while CALL AGAIN is a competitor and LADY DUCKWORTH could be the blowout first up.

Tips: 1-3-7-2
Suggested: 1. OUR IDYLL win.

1. OUR IDYLL
3. CASTILLO DEL LAGO
7. SWEET STRAWBERRY
2. CALL AGAIN
4. LADY DUCKWORTH

Race 3 – 1:50PM TABTOUCH – BETTER YOUR BET HANDICAP (1600 METRES)

PURE DEVOTION looks the way to go. Major player in the autumn fillies features and enjoyed a nice first-up hit-out two weeks back, following the rail throughout and not getting a lot of galloping room late. Wasn’t far away at the finish at all on that occasion and rising to the mile with a more fluent passage, Pure Devotion will he hard to counter. Was keen BIG SCREEN in the same race as the on-topper last start but after looking home he was out-muscled by Big Bada Boom. Effort was there and he’ll take some running down again out in front. SPEED DREAM is progressive and comes out of a fast 1200m race, but the sharp rise to the mile is a query, while BRAGWELL was stiff last start and ON RED ALERT was brave in the listed Hannan’s Handicap in Kalgoorlie.

Tips: 2-3-6-5
Suggested: 2. PURE DEVOTION win.

2. PURE DEVOTION
3. BIG SCREEN
6. SPEED DREAM
5. BRAGWELL
4. OLDEN

Race 4 – 2:30PM GUINNESS HANDICAP (2150 METRES)

Hard not to be impressed by the Ascot 13/10 victory of THERE’S A THOUGHT and expecting her to measure up to this grade. Liked the way she travelled in transit and when asked for the big effort, really lowered and got down to business over the final 200m. Hails from the in-form Dan Morton yard, top hoop Chris Parnham regains the mount and with a nice smother in transit There’s A Thought can steamroll them again. VINTAGE STOCK is 28 days between runs but her form before the break was very strong. Rises to 59kg but racing too well to be underestimated. It’s noteworthy that ANTIQUE JEWEL gets a 5kg weight advantage over There’s A Thought after their last start clash, while stablemate MISS ZEDEL is in the mix and if AXEL ‘R’ EIGHT gets it right out in front he can nick it.

Tips: 5-2-9-3
Suggested: 5. THERE’S A THOUGHT win.

5. THERE’S A THOUGHT
2. VINTAGE STOCK
9. ANTIQUE JEWEL
3. MISS ZEDEL
1. AXEL ‘R’ EIGHT

Race 5 – 3:14PM CROWN PERTH HANDICAP (1200 METRES)

Big test for TESTING LOVE and thinking she has the depth to pass. Has been brought along slowly by new trainer Adam Durrant this prep and even went to Geraldton 10/10 for a confidence-boosting second-up win. Like the way this mare was able to get herself out of a jam last start and while another 1200m is a slight query, she will appreciate the predicted genuine tempo. Slick filly SNIPAROOCHY is the one expected to be setting the pace and if she crosses to the rail without burning too much fuel she may simply be too fast. ANGELIC MISS goes good but it will be a big effort to run on and win with 59kg first up, respect for smart on-pacer UNIVERSAL PLEASURE first up and SHE’S GOD TO YOU has plenty of talent also and looks the goods in her lead-up barrier trial.

Tips: 11-13-2-3
Suggested: 11. TESTING LOVE win.

11. TESTING LOVE
13. SNIPAROOCHY
2. ANGELIC MISS
3. UNIVERSAL PLEASURE
6. SHE’S GOD TO YOU

Race 6 – 3:50PM SCHWEPPES HANDICAP (1200 METRES)

The Cerise And White flavour rolls on into Race 6 and while Peters Inc have a two-pronged attack, SECRET PLAN is shades MAGICAL DREAM as the pick of the pair. Secret Plan has been a work in progress and while everything fell into place for him in his first-up Ascot 9/10 win, the win was arrogant. Won’t get things his own way from the outside alley, so the acid is on Secret Plan, but confident his engine with kick in late and drive him over the top. HOT ZED has taken care of Secret Plan in the past and his first-up victory over Miss Conteki was significant. Commands respect. Magical Dream is no slouch and a bold first-up showing is anticipated, while the same can be said for smart mare PLATINUM BULLET.

Tips: 7-1-4-8
Suggested: 7. SECRET PLAN win.

7. SECRET PLAN
1. HOT ZED
4. MAGICAL DREAM
8. THE FUGAZI
2. MULTIVERSE

Race 7 – 4:25PM AMELIA PARK HANDICAP (1000 METRES)

We’ll see what WILCHINO is made of when having her first crack in this company. Returning from a 63-day let up, this mare has plotted her way through the lower grades in impressive fashion, but it’s now time to see how her talent measures up. The eye and all the numbers suggest she’s up to the task though, and with the run she’s likely to enjoy, this does look a lovely setup. Punters might be a bit tired of BRIGHT DIAMOND after last prep but she’s still got enough quality to impact this first up. Tough, strong on-pacer VANE TEMPEST has to be considered a threat, while a race-fit MOOD SWINGS boxes on and BILLY RAY could be the wildcard first up.

Tips: 5-12-1-4
Suggested: 5. WILCHINO win.

5. WILCHINO
12. BRIGHT DIAMOND
1. VANE TEMPEST
4. MOOD SWINGS
11. BILLY RAY

Race 8 – 5:00PM BREAST CANCER RESEARCH CENTRE OF WA – BELGRAVIA STAKES (1200 METRES)

The Belgravia Stakes is always a belter and despite the omission of Treasured Star, this edition is no exception. Simply have to stick with ARCADIA GRACE after being very bullish about her 3YO Classic hopes two weeks back, when never getting a good crack at them in the straight. Will relish the rise to 1200m, maps to follow the rail down on 53kg, and with daylight late Arcadia Grace can explode. Big step up for IT’SARAYDAY but this fellow does look to have what it takes. Oozes class and Pat Carbery is riding ahead of stablemate LIWA. Liked the tough first-up effort from PAT’S GOT SASS and she maps to enjoy the run of the race. Will lightning strike twice for Liwa coming from last, while we’ll see whether the outstanding winter form of SEARCHIN’ ROC’S stands up.

Tips: 15-6-13-4
Suggested: 15. ARCADIA GRACE win.

15. ARCADIA GRACE
6. IT’SARAYDAY
13. PAT’S GOT SASS
4. LIWA
10. SEARCHIN’ ROC’S

Race 9 – 5:40PM PLATINUM HORSE TRANSPORT HANDICAP (1400 METRES)

Could’ve gone a few different ways in an interesting race to finish the day, but ended up rolling with COMFORT ME on top. Took a big leap forward last prep when unlucky not to win three straight Belmont ratings races, and his first-up return with 61kg was excellent considering some of the traffic issues he encountered. Elevates off that with 3kg less and the rise to 1400m is another positive. No surprise to see BAD WOLF pounce. Comes out of a hot race two weeks back and should’ve finished closer. STARALIGN and KARIJINI AURORA are major players again after placing here last Saturday, while quality front-running topweight LORENTINIO has to be considered first up.

Tips: 7-6-5-8
Suggested: 7. COMFORT ME win.

7. COMFORT ME
6. BAD WOLF
5. STARALIGN
8. KARIJINI AURORA
1. LORENTINIO
