The Leg Up: Ascot Preview – Saturday 15 February 2020

Race 1 – 1:02PM TABTOUCH WESTSPEED PLATINUM MAIDEN (1400 METRES)

Could be the day for DIAMOND TRADE. Put in a poor one first-up but rebounded nicely a fortnight ago, closing with strength late to just miss catching Princely Package. Maps nicely from the mid draw and should be hard to hold out. Big watch on first-starter FORGOTTEN JEWEL, who looks quite a strapping type at trials. Backing up only five days after a smart Lark Hill trial win, and could find the rail in front and simply keep rolling. TRADE FAIR EXPRESS is knocking on the door, but Diamond Trade was a better run last start, while anticipating a more competitive performance from PHANDIERI.

Tips: 8-6-1-9
Suggested: 8. DIAMOND TRADE win.

8. DIAMOND TRADE
6. FORGOTTEN JEWEL
1. TRADE FAIR EXPRESS
9. PHANDIERI

Race 2 – 1:42PM D’ORSOGNA MAIDEN (1100 METRES)

This Maiden isn’t a great advertisement for Perth metro racing, but there’s still a winner to be found and SECAIT has landed in a suitable first-up assignment. Has shown plenty at trials over the journey and is yet to really translate it to raceday, but has two soft trial wins under her belt this prep and won’t get many better opportunities than this. UNIVERSAL ANGEL is the interesting runner. Was scratched Ascot 1/02 with a leg infection, but backing Team WIlliams in to have him ready to perform on debut, while THE HONEYMAN and MIMS WIN should both drift back and swoop late.

Tips: 7-2-3-1
Suggested: 7. SECAIT win.

7. SECAIT
2. THE HONEYMAN
3. MIMS WIN
1. ERISTIC

Race 3 – 2:22PM VERT DE GRECE YEARLINGS PLATE (1000 METRES)

Quite keen on GUARDED. Showed plenty at trials and was well supported ($7 to $5) on debut, enduring a torrid run three wide/no cover before finishing a brave fourth. Expecting him to find the rail in front, or at least outside leader, and he should be too slick for them coming back to the 1000m. DOM TO SHOOT was good enough to get the job done second up and Surveillance made the form look good with a Magic Millions placing last week. Must consider. Anticipating support for $110,000 yearling OFF WEGO with Pike on, SUNNYSILK has been performing consistently, while FINCH ‘N’ CHIPS could bob up.

Tips: 2-6-7-11
Suggested: 2. GUARDED win.

2. GUARDED
6. OFF WEGO
7. SUNNYSILK
11. FINCH ‘N’ CHIPS

Race 4 – 2:55PM SEACORP HANDICAP (1000 METRES)

Liked SOME SORT at Pinjarra last week, but he was scratched and saved for this assignment, which appears set up nicely for him. Showed heaps last prep, with form around sound top-end talent and matched strides with Regal Power in a Lark Hill 28/01 trial. Is a natural front-runner, so thinking he lands outside leader from this draw and proves to classy late. PLUTOCRACY is flying, but is becoming ‘one of those horses’. Draw hinders, but racing too well to ignore. HOBOKEN looks ready to fire back to the 1000m, but needs space from gate one, while likely leader TRANSGRESSOR is in career-best form.

Tips: 9-7-5-2
Suggested: 9. SOME SORT win.

9. SOME SORT
7. PLUTOCRACY
5. HOBOKEN
2. TRANSGRESSOR

Race 5 – 3:30PM CYRIL FLOWER STAKES (1200 METRES)

Thinking this could be a DON’T FUSS kind of race. Loomed to win the Miss Andretti Stakes two back and wasn’t really ridden to advantage in the Scenic Blast Stakes last start. Like the booking of Chris Parnham, is race-hardened at this stage of his prep, and his best form does stack up. FLOWER OF WAR couldn’t have been more impressive in last week’s mighty Pinjarra win. Facing her toughest test, but if she finds the rail in front she’ll take some getting past. VALOUR ROAD is a star, but has a few things against him, while SARACINO was a better run than Valour Road last start and maps sweetly.

Tips: 5-6-1-8
Suggested: 5. DON’T FUSS each way.

5. DON’T FUSS
6. FLOWER OF WAR
1. VALOUR ROAD
8. SARACINO

Race 6 – 4:10PM CHALLENGE STAKES (1500 METRES)

Excited to see uber-talented SUPERSTORM in action and with even luck he should be winning. Arguably a good thing beat in the WA Guineas and was stiff again in the G1 Kingston Town Classic, so his form is outstanding, and he was given a nice blow out in a Belmont 3/02. Should just win and book his ticket to Melbourne for an Australian Guineas assault. Stablemate TUSCAN QUEEN is a legit star in her own right, but she’s on a WA Oaks/Derby prep and won’t be as wound up as Superstorm. Really like MONTELENA as a horse, follow her closely this prep, while NAUGHTY BY NATURE was dominant first up.

Tips: 2-1-5-7
Suggested: 2. SUPERSTORM win.

2. SUPERSTORM
1. TUSCAN QUEEN
5. MONTELENA
7. NAUGHTY BY NATURE

Race 7 – 4:45PM AMELIA PARK HANDICAP (1500 METRES)

Hard to look past in-form front-runner PATRISTIC. Led and won three on the bounce, before being undone by the genius of Pike on smart type Inspirational Girl last start. Suited down in weight coming back to 1500m, and if he holds his current form not sure any of these can catch him. Old favourite GUNNAGO is in good nick though and can make things interesting. Just needs clear galloping room from gate one to impact. With two trials under her belt class 4YO ADORNMENT is expected to fire after a long break, two in a row looks a stretch for MEDIA BARON, while DEBELLATIO is a must for your exotics.

Tips: 6-2-8-3
Suggested: 6. PATRISTIC win.

6. PATRISTIC
2. GUNNAGO
8. ADORNMENT
3. MEDIA BARON
4. DEBELLATIO

Race 8 – 5:20PM HEINEKEN 3 HANDICAP (1400 METRES)

We saw what Peters Investments filly Celebrity Queen was able to do first-up at Pinjarra last Saturday, and expecting much the same from similarly-talented stablemate SPECIAL CHOICE. Have a lot of time for this 3YO and while her Belmont 3/02 trial lacked sizzle, it’s important to note the blinkers were not on. With even luck, should simply be too good. INFLATION has had an interrupted prep, but is suited at 1400m and the stable is back in a bit of form. Jarrad Noske worked out PLAYING MARIKA last week and she has to be considered backing up, while MR KUNAFA and TOO FAT TOO SLOW can measure up.

Tips: 9-3-5-11
Suggested: 9. SPECIAL CHOICE win.

9. SPECIAL CHOICE
3. INFLATION
5. PLAYING MARIKA
11. TOO FAT TOO SLOW

Race 9 – 5:55PM CROWN PERTH HANDICAP (2100 METRES)

The ‘Get Out’ looks a bit of a raffle on paper, but pretty happy to be on board with Albany visitor DEFIANTLY. Has been very stiff not to win her last two, including last Thursday when unsuccessfully protesting against the winner. Ready for the 2100m now and if Jade McNaught can keep her out of trouble, Defiantly looks really well positioned to score. NAVY BLUE cramed his midweek opposition over the Ascot 2200m last start and that win was simply too good to ignore. BARBIE WILL DO is a major player backing up, while PLAYS THE GAME and VOLKSWAGON FRANK warrant consideration also.

Tips: 5-2-4-11
Suggested: 5. DEFIANTLY each way.

5. DEFIANTLY
2. BARBIE WILL DO
4. PLAYS THE GAME
11. VOLKSWAGON FRANK
