Saturday’s Ascot winners on breeding

Six winners of nine for local stallions.

The $500,000 Group 2 Perth Cup was taken out by Star Exhibit for a second time. Star Exhibit is by Sun Stud’s Statue Of Liberty (retired) and bred by the Peters Investments juggernaut. Whether you like Bob Peters or not, whether you think his dominance of Perth is good or bad, you must admire his ability to breed quality thoroughbreds.

Hats off to trainer Adam Durrant, who took control of Star Exhibit on his return from campaigning in the Eastern States – yesterday’s win was his sixth start for the Durrant stable.

Local stakes honours went to Mungrup Stud’s Oratorio, with his speedy mare Misty Metal scorching the turf in the $100,000 Summer Scorcher. Her connections have had a great ride, with the mare having won 9 of her 17 starts, and placed on 5 occasions, with a bank balance of $434,935 and more to come. Trainers’ Robert and Todd Harvey have managed this mare very well.

Oratorio made it a double with the win of Beat The Devil in the “get out stakes”.

Mungrup Stud’s Oratorio has proven to be a very reliable stallion to produce winners since entering stud in 2005. He is the sire of 406 progeny to race for 244 individual winners (60%), with earnings of over $23 million, and has produced 16 stakes winners and 16 stakes-placed performers.

Oratorio stood for $11,000 this season and will be represented with 13 yearlings in the Perth Magic Millions Sales.

Freshman sire Safeguard, the son of champion stallion Exceed and Excel, picked up his second winner with his daughter Miss West Coast taking our the open 2YO handicap.  He looks to be a stallion with a very bright future.

A full – sister to Miss West Coast will be offered by Mogumber Park Stud at the Perth sales.

Local stallions with winners – Oratorio (Mungrup Stud), Safeguard (standing this season at Oakland Park), Smug, Demerit (Taunton Vale) and Alfred Nobel (Lynward Park).
