Lankan Rupee’s quest for back-to-back T.J. Smith Stakes titles will be carried out from barrier four after starting positions for the $2.5 million Group 1 were allocated on Tuesday.
The Mick Price-trained star fared the best of the big names in what will be the next phase of the clash of the world’s three highest-rated sprinters.
Lankan Rupee won last year’s T.J. Smith Stakes (1200m) from barrier one.
Terravista, who defeated Chautauqua and Lankan Rupee in the Darley Classic last November, will start from barrier 10 with Chautauqua, who was first of the big three home in the Newmarket Handicap when second behind Brazen Beau, to start from barrier nine.
Oliver’s best hope of a Group 1 win at Randwick on Day 1 of The Championships, which is headlined by the $3 million Doncaster Mile, appears to come in the ATC Australian Derby (2400m), in which he will ride Preferment.
The Victoria Derby winner has the outside barrier to contend with, however, coming up with gate 10 in the $2 million event.
