Quality Mare Dainty Tess Retires To Stud

Quality mare Dainty Tess has run her last race and will be sold as a broodmare later this year.

Trained by Dan Morton, the daughter of War Chant won 14 races and was placed on 16 occasions from her 39 starts.

Her feature wins included the Group 3 Prince Of Wales (1000m) twice, the Group 3 Irwin Stakes (1100m) in Adelaide and the Listed Crawford Stakes (1000m).

Dainty Tess collected $891,150 in prizemoney and $202,500 in Westspeed bonuses.

Morton said it was a sad day for his stable.

“She has been a stable star for us and one of the toughest horses that I have trained for a long time,” Morton told The Races WA.

“She will head to the Gold Coast at the end of May for the big broodmare sale over there.

“It’s a difficult decision and to be honest I did sit on my hands for a while when I discovered she had complications with her knee this time around.

“It wasn’t an easy decision, but it was either go down the path of a knee op or get her back to racing at the highest level.

“There was a lot of thought that went into it and I’m comfortable that we are doing the right thing.

“She is a tough mare and I think some of the better studs would be looking at her.”
