Pike’s Melbourne Plans

Fresh from breaking his Australian riding record at Belmont on the weekend, champion jockey William Pike has his sights set on making an impact in Victoria later in the year.

Pike said plans are constantly evolving due to COVID-19 restrictions, but he hoped to be based in Melbourne for the spring carnival to partner star Perth horses.

Including Regal Power, Showmanship and Superstorm, Pike is in line to ride a host of potential top liners in feature races for owner, Bob Peters and co-trainers, Grant and Alana Williams.

Just days out from smashing the national benchmark of 224 wins he set last season (2019-20), Pike sailed past the record when he partnered Inspirational Girl.

Pike said he was excited by the challenge of competing against the best riders in feature races in Melbourne.

“The plans change daily pretty much with the rules changing every other day, but the plan is to head over and try to win a big race,” Pike told Tabradio.

“The way it is panning it looks like I will have to go over and base myself up there for a little while.

“The plan is to go back and win another trophy, that is the main goal, but how it’s going to happen I’m not really sure.

“I’ve discussed it with the family and it’s something I want to do. They know how great an opportunity.

“It’s definitely on the radar.”

In a season of memorable highlights, Pike says it’s too difficult to pinpoint one race or horse over another, but admits one event does hold sentimental appeal.

“I always love the Railway (Stakes), it’s my favourite race,” Pike said.

“That is probably my main moment and the All Star Mile, to be able to go over to Melbourne and get a win, it had eluded me a bit.

“But I always love the Railway to be perfectly honest, it’s my Holy Grail.”

Regal Power, Arcadia Queen and Showmanship are ready to have jump-outs this week.

The Lawrence Stakes at Caulfield next month are first-up options for Regal Power or Arcadia Queen.

Pike rode Regal Power to win the All-Star Mile at Caulfield in March.
