Group 2 Perth Cup winner Mississippi Delta has been retired following a disappointing performance in the Group 3 Strickland Stakes on the weekend in Western Australia.
The six-year-old mare by High Chaparral had 22 career starts for 10 victories, including the Perth Cup and the G3 R.J. Peters Stakes.
“She’s been a fantastic mare for us and she’ll go to the breeding barn now,” said owner-breeder Bob Peters.
“We always planned for her to have these three runs before retirement, it’s just a shame she found wet tracks for all of them.”
Peters said that the racing career of Perfect Jewel, who finished second in the Strickland Stakes and won two lead-up races, is uncertain.
“I need to speak to a few handicappers today,” he said.
“I wouldn’t rule out a trip to Melbourne if she can get into some of the mares races with a reasonable weight.
“I’ll make my decision on whether she races on pending the outcome of those conversations.”
