An understated Neville Newton is taking a cautious approach with Comanche Red in the Race Round 2015 Tentland Tickets Now On Sale Handicap (1200m) on Saturday.
Newton believes a weight rise could test the Fly Pegasus gelding who unleashed a brilliant finish to score handsomely when resuming first-up two weeks ago.
Carrying 56.5kg for apprentice Emma Stent and against his usual pattern of racing, Comanche Red came from last and defeated Kronfeld by a long-head.
“I was a little concerned when he got that far back because he generally races on speed or just behind,” said Newton.
“But when he turned and straightened in the run home he put paid to them with a terrific finishing burst.
“He should improve second up and will probably start favourite but I have been caught out before spruiking my horses.
“There are a couple of good horses he is up against including Akhedasset and Saxon Coast.
“Grand Palace won well the other day and is on the minimum.”
Comanche Red will carry 58kg with the claim of Emma Stent. He has drawn the outside gate in a field of seven runners.
Newton says stable mate Marshall Street could be the big improver in the Skyracing.TV Provincial Championship Series Heat (1400m).
Despite the former Victorian holding a modest record of just one win from 29 starts, Newton has a genuine opinion of the Bel Esprit gelding.
Newton says Marshall Street, who raced wide throughout when eighth to Lord Hatras last fortnight, is overdue for a change in luck.
“I thought this horse could be anything when he arrived to my stables,” said Newton.
“I rate him highly and in the same bracket as Comanche Red.
“His form is better than what it reads on paper.
“He just needs an ounce of luck to go his way.
“I think if he gets it he could show improvement.
“He is going to win a race shortly.”
Leading trainer Peter Fernie will play a strong hand in the race with three starters: Thidwick The Moose, Master Beckett and Casino Belle.
Former Sydney galloper Thidwick The Moose looks the hardest to beat after staving off Chop It Out two weeks ago, his first win for the stable.
Real Glow for Pat Bermingham Jnr and Helen Harding’s Anywhere Express are also in with winning claims.
