In what was one of the closest finishes for the day at Ascot, the Jim Taylor trained New Time ($2.70 – $3.50 fav) arrived in the last stride to take out the Selangor TC Trophy BM78+ 1400m.
Suited by the frenetic early pace, the Key Business 7yo was able to wind up from the top of the straight under spirited riding from hoop Jerry Noske to grind down the unlucky Paseo Del Prado ($12.00) in the shadows of post by a mere long neck.
The in-form Carry The Nation ($6.50) battled home hard from near last to record the fastest final sectional (34.54 sec) in finishing a further length adrift in third.
Commenting on New Time after the race Taylor said “as long as he has room in the straight he always hits the line well, and with the quick pace early – it suited us”.
Speaking about the future for the 7yo gelding Taylor mentioned “he’s a very sound horse and can probably go a couple more years”.
It was the tenth victory for New Time in its 58 start career spanning over five years, with the prize money purse bulging beyond $350,000.
