Foster Trio Headline Impressive Breeders Classic

Trainer Simon Foster heads into Sunday’s $100,000 Listed Western Australian Breeders’ Classic (1400m) with three strong chances, highlighted by Group 3 winner Prentice.

Prentice heads into Sunday’s feature first-up after he finished at the tail of the field in last year’s AAMI Victoria Derby taken out by Preferment at Flemington.

The gelding trialled at Bunbury last Tuesday, and Foster said he was pleased with the condition of his stable star.

“He’s up and ready to go, his trial was nice and he was really only there for a blowout,” Foster said.

“He has filled out physically, and he has come back a lot stronger after a good three month break.”

Foster said he nominated Prentice for the Group 2 WA Derby (2400m) on April 11, but said he would monitor the progress the galloper made before he committed to starting him in the autumn classic.

Foster also nominated Big Caroline and Sonata In Dee for Sunday’s feature event.

Sonata In Dee finished five lengths behind Red Ora in the Magic Millions Three-Year-Old Trophy (1200m) on February 14, before she recorded an impressive victory at Pinjarra over 1300 metres on February 22.

Foster said the filly’s win at Pinjarra was “sensational” and thought the Breeders’ Classic would be a good chance for her to perform at black-type level.

“Her run behind Red Ora was pretty good, and where she came from the other day to win was sensational,” he said.

“It is a nice chance for her to pick up a black-type win or placing for her breeding.”

Big Caroline resumed from a short break over 1216 metres at Bunbury on February 19and was narrowly beaten by Just Dougie, however, Foster said he was impressed with how the filly attacked the line.

“At the top of the straight I was worried she would drop out and run last, but her last 100 was sensational,” he said.

“She just lost her concentration a bit last start, but I’m happy where she is at going into this race.”

Big Caroline drew barrier seven with Troy Turner to take the ride, while Foster booked Glenn Smith to ride Prentice who has the top-weight of 60 kilograms and drew barrier two.

Sonata In Dee gets in on the minimum weight of 54 kilograms and drew barrier three for the $100,000 feature.
