“You could send her anywhere in the world at any time. She is a credit to herself, her family and WA Racing.”
That was how trainer Lindsey Smith described top apprentice Lucy Warwick after she had won the Carbine Club-Apprentices Cup (2200m) on form galloper Zarantz.
Zarantz won easily from Reset’s Mate and Heart Show, the latter running on after being last early. “He was set for this race because of the rating and the attractive stake money and I booked Lucy early last week.”
Zarantz has now won his last three races and will probably have one more run before being spelled. Smith does not think he is a Perth Cup performer at this stage and is leaning towards the Pinjarra and Bunbury
Cups next March. “I wasn’t worried with Lucy having him next to last early. That is his usual style and if he is pushed forward early he can grab hold of the bit and pull. She let him settle and then move forward
down the back of the course. I thought she had it won by the home turn when she had him in third place.”
Lucy Warwick said Zarantz wobbled about a bit in the run home and, unlike the trainer, she was a bit concerned with being near the rear early, particularly with pacemaker Saxon’s Patch opening up a break of a dozen lengths.
At the presentation, owner Brett Fogarty said he now believed Smith’s description of himself “as the best trainers of stayers in Australia.” Amidst laughter Smith replied, ” ‘it was nice of Brett to remember that.”
Lucy Warwick made it a double in the sixth race when pacemaker Brother Patrick, trained by her father Justin, won comfortably from Helena Miss and Mad Brad.
The brilliant young rider is fast winning hearts and minds with her ability and sweet nature. When the course MC, Wes Cameron mentioned to her that she must be pleased with her form Warwick
replied, ” I was a bit worried recently when I went a fortnight without winning.”
