Saturday’s Ascot winners on breeding

Three Group 3 races at Ascot yesterday, with Coolmore’s Pierro taking out the Champion Fillies with his daughter Arcadia Queen and former shuttler Medaglia D’Oro’s son Durendal winning the Colonel Reeves.

The third, the R.J.Peters Stakes was won by the exciting 5YO Freo, a son of Izmir, who didn’t set the world on fire while standing in Western Australia at Rivercrest Stud and then Starline Park.

Freo is one of only a handful of winners for Izmir and is his first stakes winner. Izmir, by Red Ransom, is a full brother to successful stallion Domesday, formerly a Darley stallion now standing at Aquis Farm.

Freo looks to be a very progressive galloper for former Irish jumps jockey Dan O’Connor.

The standout on the day for local stallions was the second dominant win by the 2YO filly Specialism, who does look special for Oakland Park and Mogmumber Park Studs’ Safeguard.

Early trial performances of Safeguard’s progeny and comments from leading trainers that have them in their yard suggest we are going to hear a lot more about this multiple Group winning son of Exceed And Excel.

Safeguard stood his first two seasons at Mogumber Park and now stands at Oakland Park for $6,600.

Four local stallions had winners on the day – Safeguard, Patronize, Izmar and Blackfriars.
