On April 11th Perth Racing will host one of the more unique races on the thoroughbred landscape, with the listed Matchmaker Classic at Ascot racecourse.
As the name suggests, the race is designed to pair some of the state’s best fillies and mares over 1400 metres with the state’s best stallions. The first four across the line in the Classic, are required to nominate a stallion that will subsequently provide a free serve, which has been graciously offered by breeders across Western Australia.
Since the inception, the Matchmaker Classic has seen star gallopers such as Paris Heartbeat, Dedicated Miss, Danecay, New Image, Bermaise, Mabel Grace and Soldier’s Lass take out the event, with the 2015 instalment expected to crown another.
As an initiative, the Matchmaker Classic helps strengthen and consolidate the bloodlines of the Western Australian thoroughbred breeding industry, as the girls fiercely chase a listed victory, which is invaluable for their breeding credentials.
In 2015 free services are most generously offered by Alwyn Park, Geisel Park, Giadreso Racing, Lonsdale Park, Alan MacAlister, Mogumber, Mungrup Stud, Oakland Park, Scenic Lodge, Westbury Park and Yarrdale Stud.
