Race 1 – 12:54PM CYSTIC FIBROSIS WA PLATE (1100 METRES)
A few sharp youngsters engaged in this and thinking a fresh DANCE MUSIC can confirm her class. Made an impression with dominant lower-grade wins at her first two outings and happy to forgive her last start, when at the end of her prep. The Simon A. Miller youngsters have been firing recently and with Pike on, Dance Music should go close. PABLO’S POEM was super against some quality older horses last start and maps closer from a better draw. Likely leader DRIFTSTAR reminded everyone of his talents last time, but has to back it up, while CUP NIGHT is very progressive and can’t be taken lightly.
Suggested: 8. DANCE MUSIC win.
8. DANCE MUSIC
1. PABLO’S POEM
5. CUP NIGHT
Race 2 – 1:35PM BALLPOINT CONSTRUCTION HANDICAP (1200 METRES)
Have a bit of time for first-upper SOVEREIGN TRADE and happy to have him on top. Found him a couple of times last prep when unleashing big finishes to salute at Pinjarra and Belmont, and if he can hold a midfield running position then he’s more than capable of charging over the top late. Pat Carbery has also given a lead by hopping off PEARL TRADE. IN LOVE WITH PARIS is the class runner and was game in defeat first-up behind the smart Stageman. Outside alley does make things tricky though. Likely leader THE NICCONIAN is flying and must be considered, while ON THE TURPS can swoop late.
Suggested: 4. SOVEREIGN TRADE each way.
4. SOVEREIGN TRADE
2. IN LOVE WITH PARIS
9. THE NICCONIAN
8. ON THE TURPS
Race 3 – 2:25PM DEVWEST HANDICAP (2200 METRES)
Some progressive types in this and the one with the most upside appears to be MISSISSIPPI DELTA. Was keen on her last Saturday and after a few nervous moments on the turn, she let down powerfully late to score. Up in weight and distance for this third-up assignment, but with clear galloping room it’s hard seeing anything being able to match her closing speed. SALON DU CHEVAL goes good and is searching for a fifth straight win. He’s the danger. DARK PROSPECT handled his first middle-distance test well last time, while the tough front-running mare FIVE DEGREES will take some getting past.
Suggested: 3. MISSISSIPPI DELTA win.
3. MISSISSIPPI DELTA
1. SALON DU CHEVAL
2. DARK PROSPECT
4. FIVE DEGREES
Race 4 – 3:05PM EXPRESS INTERIOR DESIGN HANDICAP (1100 METRES)
STAGEMAN has something about him and thinking he can win again. Another talent from the powerful Peters Investments camp, this fellow stalked a hot speed and dug deep to hold off the classy In Love With Paris second up, and he’s capable of elevating further off that solid platform. The horse to beat. MISTY METAL ran her heart out first up and that hit out should bring her forward nicely. With a better getaway here she can land in a suitable position outside likely leader JINGTANG, who will be looking to dictate proceedings. While SHOWCASE has brilliant closing speed, but maps rearwards.
Suggested: 8. STAGEMAN win.
4. MISTY METAL
Race 5 – 3:40PM CONQUER CYSTIC FIBROSIS-ASCOT GOLD CUP (1800 METRES)
Plenty of hopes in this and anticipating a peak performance from the gifted MISSILE LAUNCH at his third run back. Has faded on his run at both outings this campaign, suggesting he’s racing his way into condition, and he did loom as the Northam Cup winner, recording a race-fastest 400m to 200m split. Maps to advantage from a low draw and his best is certainly good enough. LIKE A BUTTERFLY caught the eye first-up in a very fast 1400m event and is a stakes winner over this Track/Distance last season. CAPPO D’ORO rolls forward and boxes on, while ROYAL STAR should be getting close now.
Suggested: 10. MISSILE LAUNCH each way.
10. MISSILE LAUNCH
5. CAPPO D’ORO
4. ROYAL STAR
3. PRIZE CATCH
*Numbers amended after scratchings.
Race 6 – 4:15PM WAROA-LEE STEERE STAKES (1400 METRES)
Can’t wait to see ENTICING STAR tackle the toughest test of her career and pretty confident the unbeaten 5YO can justify G1 Winterbottom Stakes favouritism with victory here. Hasn’t been seen since a soft Birthday Stakes victory last month, maps rearwards and the WFA scale will be a challenge, so there is a bit against her and we’ll all get an opportunity to see precisely what she’s made of. The outstanding SCALES OF JUSTICE has looked awesome at trials following back surgery. Must be respected. MAN BOOKER is a gun and knocked off Galaxy Star last start, while GREAT SHOT is always a contender.
Suggested: 8. ENTICING STAR win.
8. ENTICING STAR
1. SCALES OF JUSTICE
3. MAN BOOKER
2. GREAT SHOT
Race 7 – 4:50PM CBRE SUPPORTING CYSTIC FIBROSIS-FAIRETHA STAKES (1400 METRES)
Easily the toughest race on the card to assess and ended up playing safe with CHIX PIC. Has the best lead-up credentials having claimed the Bunbury 3YO feature first-up before a mighty second in an intense Belgravia Stakes. Lady Cosmology and Flirtini have strengthened the formline since, and Chix Pic can’t be overlooked. The gifted BLACK SABBATH succumbed to the pressure of the Belgravia Stakes late after doing some heavy lifting early. Maps to enjoy a more suitable run in transit here though. TRUE DEFENDER maps to advantage, while REGAL POWER must be included following Pike’s booking.
Suggested: 2. CHIX PIC each way.
2. CHIX PIC
3. BLACK SABBATH
5. TRUE DEFENDER
13. REGAL POWER
Race 8 – 5:30PM TABTOUCH – BETTER YOUR BET HANDICAP (1600 METRES)
Great option for BLACKWOOD RIVER. Arguably WA’s best maiden, this 3YO has run into well-regarded trio Leading Girl, True Attraction and Unikat in three starts this prep, and with luck in running last time he really should’ve won. Suited on 54kg from an inside alley, and with positive tactics he can lead all the way. OUQBA JACK was $5.50 to $4.40 last time and was gobbled up late after breezing three-wide throughout. Brave in defeat and will be hard to beat from the low draw. ADMIRAL PROMO caught the eye last time and will have admirers, while SENTIMENTAL FRIEND is the class runner resuming.
Suggested: 8. BLACKWOOD RIVER win.
8. BLACKWOOD RIVER
2. OUQBA JACK
7. ADMIRAL PROMO
4. SENTIMENTAL FRIEND
