Miller Wins Second Belmont Newmarket With Meteoroid

Meteoroid broke through for her first stakes success with a fighting victory in Listed Belmont Newmarket (1200m) at Belmont yesterday.

The Simon Miller-trained mare settled in nicely behind the leaders, but as the field of eight runners turned for home she appeared under pressure.

However; under hard and strong riding from Joe Azzopardi, who claimed the second leg of a double, Meteoroid burst clear with 50m remaining.

The daughter of Northern Meteor, who started a $5.60 chance, fought on strongly to get the better of favourite Profit Street by a short-head.

Battle Hero, racing first-up for new trainer, Chris Gangemi, hit the front inside the final 100m and was a long-head away in third place.

Meteoroid gave Miller his second Belmont Newmarket after First Among Equals defeated Rock Magic last year.

Stable representative, Kyle Nowland, said after her win Meteoroid deserved a shot at feature Ascot races later in the year.

“She didn’t travel at all, but once she got into the straight she balanced up and it was a really good win,” Nowland said.

“It’s good to get our first win of the season and a black-type one as well.

“She will go out now and be set for the mares’ series at the Ascot summer carnival.

“She has earned another season at the race track and will be a great brood mare when she gets there.”

Azzopardi claimed his second win for the meeting after earlier guiding home The Forgotten One.

He said getting the result for Meteoroid’s owners Barry and Jan McRostie was a great thrill.

“It’s great to get another win for Barry and Jan,” Azzopardi said.

“They have been great to me the whole way and are very loyal.

“They have stuck with me and it’s my third stakes win for them.”

Meanwhile Bonny Be Good looks set for a productive campaign after making a top return in the Amelia Park Lodge Handicap (1200m).

Sidelined for close to year with a pelvis injury, the Blackfriars mare let down strongly from near last to defeat Diablerie by ¾ of a length.
